Sick of the E4OD in my truck now.shifts badly whines loudly and also it feels like the truck would consume a lot less gas with a 5 speed.
so i decided i want an m5od in her.also is there a difference between the m5od and the m5od-r2? whats the best place to purchase one from?saw some on ebay but a lot were used.how do i know there not already messed up.

I'm not real sure on the differences between the two but I definitely would NOT buy a used transmission off the internet. if you're going to buy used, you need to be able to move the shifter around and make sure nothing feels sloppy. If you do this swap before I do please pot up the results in your fuel mileage difference.

R1 is light duty, R2 is medium.
r1's were used in rangers,explorers aerostars,and bronco II's.
r2's were used in f150,full size bronco, econoline, and s.c cougars and thunderbirds..

God bless wikipedia..lol
None the less, I could really use some help guuuys..
I know at least half of you are runnin this tranny and had to replace it in the past
be a sport and help a guy who knows very little about mechanics but enjoys his truck thoroughly.

Mostly they have different cases, so the R1 won't work for an F150. I got mine from the junkyard, I just got one from the newest truck they had, '96. The fluid looked clean. '88-'91 aren't as strong as '92-'96 but '92-'96 doesn't have a place for a mechanical speedometer. It doesn't matter if it's 4x4 since the speedometer bolts to the transfer case but if 2wd then the '92-'96 would need the tailshaft housing and gear to swap the mechanical speedometer to it. You can't use a 2wd tranny in a 4x4 and vice versa.

personally i would stay away from this transmission. just in my own experience. when i got my nite 5.0 5spee(m5od) it took me 4 days to rip the shiftforks outta it (due to stupidity). but i have put my 4 speed with granny through just bout all i think of and it still shifts smooth and runs great. in my opinion i would go with the 4 speed. just my opninion though.lol.

There just aren't enough gears for me to use a granny low, plus no overdrive. I had the TOD 4 speed and after killing 4 of them I switched to the M5OD. No problems since, except for a worn shift fork.

A granny 4 speed has it's place but having an OD gear is very nice to have. There is always a ZF5 speed if you want both the granny and the OD but that tranny usually runs 250-500 bucks for a good one that someone KNOWS what they have.

Thanks Sean, you answered questions I didn't even get to ask yet. So if i plan on going 4x4 in the foreseeable future, I should just stick with my rotten tranny and find the most complete donor truck i can huh?

@fordkicksass- You know, I heard you either love a 4speed granny or you don't.
But thinking about it, even though id be getting in gear at lower rpm's, wouldn't i still get better gas mileage with an extra gear?
granted I'm only assuming, I'm by no means an expert.

Thanks again guys!
