Sup guys, so I just got an old 1987 f150, its the 4.9L engine 4 spd manual 2wd, with 180 Kilometers on it. for pretty cheap.

Literally just picked it up a few hours ago, is there anything I should know about these vehicles? What have been your experiences with em? Are they reliable?

This is going to be my winter toy.

Ive never driven a ford before, and am pretty neutral about them.

From what ive heard you can't kill the 4.9L. Know a guy that used to have one and would haul his car to the track every weekend and seemed to have lots of power.

It has more torque than the 5.0, and is unbelievably tough

seems like it so far. On test drive home, it spun the tires like it was nothing. Now just need to plate it for the road. Its on a storage plate at the moment. Everything was redone on the truck in the last two years, it was purchased by a buddy of mine, from one of his buddies, who all worked on their own vehicles. New balljoints, ujoints, brakes.

The 4 speed is going to take a little while to get used to, Ive grown up driving a 5spd
jeep.

never seen anything proving the 4.9 is unstoppable (the opposite actually) but everyone says its the best engine out there lol. stats show that there all pretty close in torque (4.9 being the least)

Ya your right! I have had all three motors in a 92-96 f150 and the 4.9 is no powerhouse! Lol but it's a cool motor and can't wait till next spring to pull it out and put all new seals in it and paint it!

yea i dont want to start an argument but there's no numbers or personal experience on my end showing that there better then the 302 or the 351. hell my friends i6 just got towed home about 4 hours ago because it broke down on the side of the road lol. im not here saying that the 302 or 351 are wayy better then the i6. i just think its gotten a rep that it dont deserve IMO.

Ya. I haven't put many miles on it yet cause I just bought it so as for reliability I have no personal experience. Lol one thing I do know is It sure leaks oil out the main seal good!!

Mine only has 57k on it so it's not a prime example of anything but what it looks like brand new. but my buddy had a 93 f150 with an i6 jacked up about a foot running 35s, and all the stuff we did with that truck it wouldn't die. He finally scrapped it last year with 302k

yea, its nothing iv not seen the other engines do. my dads 75 f100 has 240k miles on it and is hardly driven anymore. i can still go outside right now and it will crank right up. my friend has 210k on his 87 f150 and same with that. mine has 103,500 area and no problems with the engine. but thats not saying much.
