I cheated on the launch ramp. Instead of backing straight down, you parallel the waters edge & jack knife the trailer backing into the water. So when you pull out, you're going up the ramp at a 45 degree angle, rather than straight up. Takes a 6 or 8 lane ramp.

Also because stopping was an event in itself, I don't think I ever had it over forty. But I made it work. Couldn't afford new truck payments & boat payment's too.

Why? I hauled about 1/4 to 1/2 cord of firewood up a hill in 3rd gear going 25 all the way she pulled it fine.

Thats the truck, the pict makes it look pretty bad, but over all its nice.

Im not sure what tranny it has,

im still relearning all the 80's mentalities for all the buttons and features. Floor highbeams were a thing ive only heard of and never seen haha.

weird turny dials for the lights and wipers,

yepp, and those flappy triangular windows in the front that opens, thats cool.

theres a video.

I've had the the 302 in several trucks and cars and its a good engine that is more at home in a car than a truck. I did have a couple of company trucks with the 351 and they were good but I was glad I didn't have to pay for gas. The 300s I've had in personal trucks and work trucks were extremely reliable and seem to keep running forever. It was used by UPS (they still have some) and as a stationary engine for gensets and pumps. Some even saw service in medium duty dump trucks. I wouldn't say its better than the V8s but I prefer it for my use and its easier to service.
On the few occasions when I have hauled my 4500 5th wheeler the 300 hauled it better than the 302. My 300 just turned 232k on the way home today and I plan to drive it at least another year as my DD unless gas prices force me into a car. My 83 302 made it to 218k but it was leaking and burning oil. Gas mileage between the 302 and 300 is about the same.

That is because the I6 makes more torque at a lower rpm then the v8s

I-6 to 302 is kind of a skip.

If you want a lower end brute/ I-6

I'd say for accent on road driving, the 302...However my I-6's never really let me down in that department either.

I-6 to 351 is a jump...in gas consumption too.
