Default Call the Locksmith!

So I managed to lose both sets of truck keys over the last couple of weeks. and now I'm on the hunt for a locksmith. I called ford, and they do keep key set codes by vin number, but only for up to 10 years. Just missed it with my 95'.

So now I've been learning about keys. I guess our key is a 2 stake key. The first half of the key works the door, and the second half works the ignition. Depending on the pattern of the first stage of the key for the door, that will determine the possible pattern of the second stage. For every pattern of the first stage, there are usually three to five possible patterns for the second stage.

So this morning I'll be calling a few locksmiths and figuring out what I'm going to have to pay for my stupid mistake. I talked to a mechanic and he said that to re-key the door locks and ignition, it would be around 400 bucks! eeek! Then I heard the cost from a locksmith will be around 100-150 bucks to duplicate the old keys. Not great, but better than 400. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

If you can get the truck to the locksmith it will be cheaper for the keys, but if he has to come to you then it's more expensive.

I called AAA, and renewed my membership this morning (45 bucks). I just got off the phone and they are sending out a locksmith. They charge a flat rate of 170, but AAA covers 60 of that. The private companies gave me a price range. That in itself kinda makes me nervous. I took the flat rate from the AAA.

In the end, its kind of like I'm paying to get my doors unlocked and a key made, and I get a years worth of roadside assistance for free.

Win some, lose some, lesson learned the hard way.

That sounds like a fair price, after the AAA discount.
