Up, as it keeps it and the regulator out of the way. Very simple if you are just doing the motor, drill out the dimples with 1/2" bit so you can use a socket to unbolt the old one, pull it out and mount the new one. It has no bearing on the motor whether it's up or down as it uses resistance to tell it when to stop, it's just easier on you if it's in the up or almost up position.

Some motors can be repaired easily and on the cheap, depending on why you are replacing it. If the motor is strong but doesn't move the window reg anymore you can replace the white plastic triangle inside the motor with a new one and reuse that motor. If the motor is weak and will work without the regulator attached but isn't strong enough to move the window up/down then it must be completely replaced, though you should pop the motor case open and save the white triangle I was talking about earlier as they can be hard to come by and are a common cause of motor failure.

I did them before reading your post. But taped them in the up position and proceeded. Look Mom no busted knuckles! It was pretty easy and saved maybe $400.00 on labor at least! The drivers side was a little harder because Im right handed and had to do most of the motor maneuvering with my left hand. Motors cost around $90.00 at O'Reilly. I could have got them at amazon for $61.00 but wanted to make sure they worked correctly. Windows work great and a lifetime warranty on the motors.

I saw motors on ebay for IIRC $39.00. I saw the repair kit for $15.00. It included the gear, another little piece and a small tube of grease I believe. Got to do my pass motor.

You may want to buy local. Its more $$$ than online but if it don't fit you can return it pretty easy instead of dickn around with shipping and such. That was my worry about online. If I were you I'd do both and not worry about the other going out sooooon. There is a youtube vid that I watched that helped a lot.

If you are fouling a motor in under a couple of years you should consider replacing the regulator and maybe even the "tracks" in the window frame.

Less then $100, much less then what Ford wanted

Where do you find these repair kits locally. Napa has a lot of stuff but never checked for the replacement gears and such. I'm also having my left window shutter some when going down. Trouble looming?

Id just buy a whole motor. Lifetime warranty at O Rielly for about $50.00 with a $15.00 core charge. I thought about a repair kit too but your motor could be shot and a repair kit may not fix it. Just my .02 worth.
