So I hooked up the notebook & scan tool again and this time enabled "Trailer Brake Module". No faults, no dtc's, and afaik everything works the same so I'm leaving it alone with all three settings enabled. Ford keeps changing things around and adding features which probably accounts for the three trailer brake controller settings vs only one on 2015's and two on later years. My truck got the Class IV Trailer Hitch option which included hitch, 4/7 pin wiring, and smart trailer tow connector. Probably unrelated, but my lowly XL also got as standard equipment pre-collision and emergency braking that formerly was reserved for Lariat and up. This is from the 2020 brochure and shows the different trailer packages possible.
This is making me think I should just figure out how to add select shift to my 2014.
last thing I want to do is spend 40k Canadian pesos on a new truck and have a non functional brake control.
Just wanted to update, I replaced the in the dash controller and despite not being able to clear the code (comes right back) I now have fully operational trailer brake.
