Default Brake Controller

I have a new STX (2.7). It came with a 7-pin connector and hitch from Ford. I need a brake controller to pull my 23ft. T/T. However, paying the dealer $350 is just not in my budget anytime soon.

Can you guy tell me what other less expensive options I have? If I buy an aftermarket B/C, is a there also a plug in pig tail available for my truck?

Thanks,

I would find a way to come up with the $350.. By the time you buy an aftermarket controller and the pig tail your well over $100. OEM brake controller is so much better.

I may have to do that. I have seen some B/C's online that have good reviews and look pretty advanced for $75-100. Just was wondering how well they would work.

I installed a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller in my 2019 XLT. I previously used it in my '05 XLT. Installation was pretty easy, and for an extra $10, you can get a Tekonsha 3036-P Brake Control Wiring Adapter for Ford that allow you to simply plug the P3 into the F150's brake controller plug.

The P3 is a very well-regarded and durable controller that is also quite customizable. Mine has been on service for over a decade and it's still more than adequate. For electric brakes or electric-over-hydraulic brakes, this is a great controller.

Those Tekonsha B/C's seem to have pretty decent reviews. I may look into that a little more as well. Thanks.

I had the older P2. It worked just fine with my Ram. The product line has been around forever. Check your glove box. Maybe you have a pigtail for a brake controller from the factory. Otherwise you can buy a PnP f150 harness.

Actually there is pigtail harness in there and I was curious what it is for, now I know, LOL. Thanks for pointing that out.

If it were me, I'd just go to an auto salvage yard and get one of the factory controllers out of a wreck.

Install it yourself, enable it with Forscan and be done with it.

That's what I did. The controller only cost me $80 Cdn and I already had the OBDII to USB adapter...

Now that's a good idea I haven;t though of. I will do some checking around to see what's available. Thanks for the idea.
