5.4 engine tick
Took my engine about a day to stop ticking. Now this worked for my engine and cant say it will work for yours, but hey again, worth a shot.I didn't add any of my own additive's to it.Only additive i add, every oil change is a can of Justice Brothers Injector cleaner.
So I changed my oil to 5w30 Castrol syntec fully synthetic oil...it quieted the tick, but it is still present! Should I give it a little longer for the oil to cycle through the motor to tell if it gets rid of the tick???
Just got truck back from dealer - complained about rough idle, high fuel consumption, and very loud clatter coming from valvetrain. Truck is an 05 Lariat 4x4 with the imfamous 5.4 Triton. Truck has 53,000 miles on it and this is what dealer told me - you have not been using Ford oil filters for oil changes and could have damaged your cam phasers. Could not believe my ears, been using Mobil1 5-20W and changed oil and filter every 5K.There are countless bullitens on this roach of a motor and Ford will not admit to any design flaws. The one thing I have in my favor is that I complained about the same problems at 27,000 miles and have that documented as dealer said truck is running fine. Total B.S. ! Anyone know of an attorney for a class actionlawsuit? Last Ford ever!!!

Special service messages
21049 1997-2010 multiple vehicle - 4.6l/5.4l - engine ticking and/or rattle noise
multiple vehicle lines with 4.6l or 5.4l engine may experience an engine ticking or rattle noise that sounds like a stuck tappet (hla). This
may be due to the deterioration of an aftermarket oil filter. Vehicles with this condition have low oil pressure at one cylinder head
only, while main pressures are normal. Dislodged material from the aftermarket oil filter blocks the cam cap oil passage, either at
cylinder #4 (right bank rear) or cylinder #5 (left bank front). For vct equipped engines, inspect the vct valve body and the oil passages
under the first cam cap. Damage to engines caused by aftermarket oil filters are not covered under warranty.

Every motor has its problems, and I think the 5.4 is far from infamous (compare it to something like the infamous 6.0PSD). Every brand has it's TSBs, the F150s have less than Chevy's from similar years. For reference, here is the engine TSB list for my old 03 Silverado (notice the Oil Filter TSB):

I guess I should not complain as all the truck makers have some problems - some more than others . Anyone know if it is safe to keep driving with loud ticking or is this thing going to grenade on me?
