Default Tire question?

Are all 285 tires the same size? I'm running 265/70/16 tires right now with plenty of clearance on my leveled 99 f150. Just ordered some 285/70/17 mud tires and rims and I've just been told that since they are 17 inch rims that they will not fit.

If you have 17 inch rims they should fit your 285/70/17. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think 285 is the height of your tire 70 is the width and usually the last number 17 is what size rim the tire fits.

Ok Correcting. The 285 is the width across the tread pattern. The 70 is the size from the rim to the tread surface. Of course the 17 is the rim diameter.

For the OP. I had 285/70R17's on my FX4 wheels and had no problems running them. They make the Fords look very strong and rigid. You'll like what you are getting (as long as you ordered 5x135 rims). Enjoy.

I had Cooper ATR's. Nice tire, but very stiff in the side walls. I went back to my 16" Utlra wheels with BFG's. I went to 275/70R16's, and the ride improved 10 fold. The BFG's have more flex in the sidewalls, making the everyday driving more enjoyable. The Coopers were a great tire, but with a bad back, were just too rough riding to keep using them. JMO

Correct, but, the 70 actually means 70% of the width. So the height of a 285/70 is (70% of 285)x2 (for top and bottom of rim) plus rim size. That's why a 285/70 is taller and wider than a 265/70

They are eagle alloy 27 super finish black. They also have center caps. I'll post pics when I get them on.
