BTW, how close is the GEN to the dryer plug? Also , I don't think that's code ...in any state lol. People do it all the time...ur use to anyway. The idea is to energize only the essentials, so without a TFSW or with, you killing the main and EVERY non essential breaker before energizing correct. T max out the gens power feed/capacity.

Unless I missed it, pretty critical to know your plan. An electrician would be a big help, BUT, and I know you mention this, -your waiting on one...it's much easier preparing while you have power then without. Are you in IRMA's path? I take it you are...Man I hope that electrician shows up, priceless at this point.

So get me on the right page ..so to speak, I'll do what I can.

Personally and I have to mention this at least once, I would never think of doing this without a transfer switch. Too much risk involved being without. Not just fire and electrocution (if that ain't enough), you could easily smoke a generator, your appliances etc to the point of non fixable.
I would absolutely be killing every breaker. Main included, before every time I would be using the generator. I am in Georgetown SC and more than half the models have it come over my head. The only reason I am even considering this is because during Matthew last year, which was a good bit weaker, we lost power for three weeks. I have an independent setup for my deepwater well so that won't have any draw here.

Also every bulb in my house is led so that will keep the draw down.

This gen will be less than 10 foot from the plug so minimal wire will be used but I have 30 ft of 30amp RV power wire I will be cutting to length.

I'm really hoping for the electrician comes through but if he isn't there by Saturday evening I want to have some sort of fall back if I'm left dead in the water.

Great! Got the right idea. Read this , it's not too long, but's it good because they received a lot of red neck answers, labeled them as spam and threw them off the site lol.

So it's cleaned up good, answers are spot on and it's pretty much very relevant to what your doing, -

I'm not sure how I would phase in the generator outlet you have on that unit. I'd think about replacing that 240 on the gen to match the plug. I see the gen has alternative ground connects under the receptacle as well. Perhaps you could update that part of the gen maybe. Anyway, yea, there may be options on the gen end but I'm not sure. The current 240 output receptacle looks old outdated and weak to me. I'd have to research that one for a safer stronger output for 240.

Your using a 3 pole/4wire, generally those are 50 amp. From this common service you can draw 120 or 240 volts. Each leg is 50 amps @ 120 volts. 50-amp X 120-volt = 6000 watts. But since there are 2 HOT 120-volt legs at 6000 + 6000 = 12,000 watts.
I don't think your gen is capable for half that much, maybe 5000 watts correct? So from what I can tell your working with the wrong plug.

Your gens showing 20 amp receptacles @ 240, like this I believe, -

Btw 30-amp 120-volt service = 3,600 watts

Perhaps you can find an adapter for that gen, something like this but with the correct outlets/inlets.

Are you leaving the electrician another message yet?

Stay safe jp, -couldn't sleep, between you and my brother being in harms way...he's close Miami, just 6 miles inland. He's staying, can you believe it ? Has his reasons and they're good ones, but is it smart ? Hell no!

Hope you and your family weather this one well. Praying for all.

Well after all my worrying I think it won't be a problem after all. Hopefully.

I was stressed out pretty bad but now I have time to have the correct line run into the house.

Stay safe my friends. Hope your brother stays away from the storm as well, Brew. My cousin flew out of Miami last night (not sure where he wound up.... he was just trying to get out). Sat on the tarmac for several hours waiting to leave.

Yea I think he's a little nuts for staying, the storm surge has a potential of reaching far inland, he's not even 400' above sea level. Thinks he'll be alright, but the surge plus all that rain, 8" in the forecast there

Wish I could find more history on the area...it's a little late now.

Then Jp's situation and wanting to help more, but didn't have all the answers..

This stuff kept me awake for awhile, that and for some reason I about freaked. Thought for sure I left an old chest of drawers full of tools in the garage at my old place. Couldn't find my list, doc put it somewhere. Anyway, found the list and I emptied the chest of drawers first before leaving it there.

What a time for that to pop into my head, I was like breathing heavy...like a code red priority 9 panic when you can't get to the John fast enough lol

It's natural. I keep wondering if I left "this" or "that" at the old house, but then find it. Even though I know without a doubt that I got everything out of there... even had my Wife and my Dad triple check for me.... I still get panicked. Especially tools and car parts. I left some wood and pipe behind on purpose.... which I now wish I would have brought, but oh well.

Went past the old place again on Sunday, six weeks after we were out. It's a complete dump. My old next door neighbor (that is RENTING, mind you) texted my Wife bitc4in' about the people we sold it to.... even told my Wife we should have "screened" the people better. LOL... yeah, nobody does that. Everybody selling right now takes highest dollar. Period.

SPEAKING OF... how is the housing and job markets where you guys are at? It is HOT HOT HOT in Utah right now. Can't get decent help anywhere because there is such a demand. Houses are selling for more than they are worth (like the one I sold). My BIL owns a construction company, and he was telling me other companies are coming to HIS job site and offering workers more money to come work with them, blah blah blah. He pays them well, but they leave when someone offers a dollar more per hour.

Sorry guys, but I won't be on here much anymore. I guess I'm not liked anymore by the Mod's. I've enjoyed the talks and back and forth. Keep us the good work. Later guys.
