A head gauge later,.is indeed an idea. And I want a trans temp, but maybe a tuner will.tell that. (I don't tow much.)
But my '01, (XLT I now know,) has an oil pressure SWITCH-type sensor, NOT an incremental sensor (with potentiometer.)
Maybe yours included the functional gauge as an option.
You can tell the original owner paid for certain basic+ creature comforts but not many. No beef, there. It was a good compromise, leaning slightly toward a good price. Maybe 27k. Probably a ranch truck. I see odd tailgate paint wear, likely from a dog leash.

The one in my '95 Mustang behaves the same, and since I've added the blower, I can see temps start rising toward the "H" mark during spirited drives up the pass in hot weather.
In no vehicle above have I seen the temp gauge needle "jump" from normal to "H" or above.
The only thing lacking in my opinion, in either case, is numbers on the gauge. Ford and other manufacturers got rid of them way back when because customers would freak out if the reading wasn't "just so," so they made the change to a "normal" range for the needle.
In your example, with so much coolant gone, the sensor was dry and had nothing to read. It started reading higher as it should, then you had a catastrophic problem, and the gauge reacted as best it could. The only thing that would have averted damage in that case is a head-temperature sensor/warning.

Oil pressure sender on all of these trucks is a switch. As for transmission temperature, there is no sensor that I'm aware of that can be read by a tuner in the 10th Gens. I added a guage in mine ( as well as an F-250 cooler). If you look at my build thread, you will find information on both.

Nope. You may. I did. Fixed my 1st crock pot meal, chicken and veggies before work. Forgot it that night and cooked dinner. Next day at noon, remembered. Oh heck. That eve it was fall off the bone tender and descrumptious.

Looked at the wiring diagrams for a 97 F150.
Oil pressure shows a simple switch s0 gauge has one position.
The water temp is a variable resistor so gauge is actually a gauge.
Hmmm. Can I coax you to peek at the battery voltmeter?
