Default seriously considering 4x4 conversion

Hey guys, i started a thread a while back on the subject of a 4wd conversion of a 01 2wd. I have the oppirtunity to buy a beater 4x4 for 700 bucks and im serious about what would be entailed in converting my 2wd over. I know it wont be easy, but i do love to work on stuff and i am a proficient welder. Any input or ideas, or realistic discussion would ve greatly appriciated.. i really am considering this i just need to know what im getting into

Thanks in advance everyone

If your serious then you might as well put a solid front axle in it

I concur! The conversion you are considering wouldn't require any welding.

You being a welder the SAS would be a perfect conversion for you. People pay welders big bucks to do this.

Plus, if you tried to just make it a factory 4x4 you would need to convert to Torsion bar as opposed to the coil over suspension you have now. If you do a SAS you can do a leaf spring set up or a 4-link with coils.

Thats what i was thinking as well on the frobt end.. what about the wiring harness and all that for the 4hi and lo.? I would presumably swap the tranny and tcase out of the otger truck, so how difficult would it be on the electrical side?

I have no idea, I would think the manual T-Case would be best for conversion but obviously you can only work with what you have.

Well so far its lookin like a better idea to just skip the truck and get a solid axle up front, a divorced t case and a driveshaft.. about right?

Since you already have a 2wd and you have fabricating skills, you might look into a long Travel suspension set up! That would turn your truck into a whole different beast off-road!
