Default Possible lifter knock

As the title says, I think I'm hearing a lifter knock in my 2000 5.4 w/180k, not sure but a few people have seemed to think that, anything to do that can help the problem or prevent it from getting worse? Thanks

Check your exhaust manifolds, a common problem on these trucks that often sounds like a lifter tick when they start leaking.

If you have a lifter tick from collapsed/stuck lifter, its not real damaging. Might only occur at idle when oil pressure is lowest.

Lifters/lash adjusters make a "tick". A " knock" is usually something more serious. Bad bearings, etc.

But, theres a way to change one easily without removing cam, just valve cover. Its basically pried out from under cam with screwdriver, being careful not to scratch cam lobe. Probably a vid on youtube.

Or, could be exhaust leak as mentioned

Yeah it's more of a tick, hopefully it's just a leaky manifold as I wouldn't feel too comfortable opening up the engine. Thx

hey I'll be the first to admit I don't know sh** about engines. Honestly I've got no clue what a lifter is. It's a moving part of the engine is about all I know. I suppose 30 minutes of Wikipedia wouldn't hurt me. The ticking sound may be a sticky valve/ valve cover no? I should probly research this first. Thanks for dealing with my ignorance

Probably the first thing you should do is check for a loose plug. Plugs in these engines tick just before blast off. It's too common to ignore.

Lifters were used in push rod engines, none existent in this Modular SOHC engine. We know what you mean though....these use lash adjusters.

Torque the plugs down to about 28' lbs or 1/2 - 3/4 turn after seat. Then post up what your using in the crank case and what's filtering it.
