I'm sure almost everyone here has encountered that problem with any fords between 97-2003. I've PMed you a link because I don't know if you can post them on the forums or not.

The 1997 - 98 trucks use a different odometer. As silly as it sounds try pounding on the dash just above the instrument cluster. Your odometer is not digital so the soldering fix will not work. The Ford fix is to replace it.

While it is not as big as a styleside I prefer the look. Besides the sides are fiberglass, no rust.

This is a common problem for 97. Our odometer is mechanical, and our problem is a worn-out small plastic gear behind the trip meter. Mine went out back in 2006.

I am sure you can. But I am not sure if the junk yard odometer will come with a healthy gear.
