Default Help with a no start condition

2001 5.4

Went to start the truck last night and it tried to turn over a little bit but then nothing. Accessories still worked but not enough to crack the engine. So I thought battery and left it for the morning. It's an Advanced Autocraft battery and it has a 3 year warranty. This month was 3 years so I figured I got lucky.

I took the battery out this morning and took it Advance Auto and it tested OK per their machine. The battery was rated 850 CCA and it tested at 667 CCA. I told him it wasn't starting the truck and it even turned over a little leading me to believe it was the battery. I ended up getting a brand new battery, however it was dated 8/14. I tested it with a volt meter when I got home and it was holding 12+ volts so I figured I was good to go.

Put the battery in and now the engine won't even try to turn over. I am getting a popping noise (not clicking) coming from the engine. It pops once each time I turn the key. I cleaned the battery cable terminals so the contacts are clean. Accessories work. Not sure what is going on.

Any thoughts on what I can check?

Thanks for the reply.

I have never done that before. Can you point me in the right direction on where to find it and how to do it?

And how do you know if it's the starter or the solenoid that went bad?

Most of the time the starter will go be fire relay if u can hear the starter clicking while u touch the relay it will mean a bad starter these trucks of two sylenoids one on starter and one on fire wall

Ok, found the solenoid and put a screw driver to it while key was turned forward and I am getting that same popping noise when I was turning the key. That means bad starter?

Check the connection on battery cables and stater also when the starter goes bad it's more of a clicking sound than a popping sound u can also feel it most of the time

Battery connections are clean and tight. Haven't had a chance to look at the starter itself yet. And it's definitely a popping sound. And it pops once. No clicking.

So if it's not clicking is it possible that is just the solenoid? How do I test that with a volt meter?
