I saw a video saying the best way to make sure it's reset is to unhook the ground from the battery then run a wire from it to the positive while the positive is still hooked up. Is that really needed?

Nope, before starting the engine make sure all electrical loads are off. Let it idle for few minutes so it can adjust the idle properly.

It's just a vacuum leak. The cheapest and easiest way to solve this problem is by making your own smoke machine.

Try disconnecting the Maf Sensor before starting it again. Any difference?

Is there a way to unplug it without pulling the airbox all apart?

Yep there is a plug where it comes out of the airbox.

Much better if you will remove it so you can be it's not the source of vacuum leak.

I completely removed the maf from the truck and it started and revved to 3000 rpm for awhile then idled (like ****) around 1000 rpm. At least it stayed running this time.

That's almost what's suppose to happen. They rev way up and die usually.

It's not the MAF, or you would have had different issues. It may be leaking is about it. Something else is going on. You need to go over things.
