Default Headliner installation

Can I re-install my old headliner, which is in very good shape, but the foam backing underneath is totally gone. I cleaned the headliner deck completely and also the cloth. Now can I glue the cloth directly to the fiber glass deck? Will that work or do I need the foam layer in between. Will the glue soak through the cloth and make the whole thing look ugly or will the glue dry up and be invisible? Has anybody ever done something like this? Or do I need to order new headliner material? Thanks for your help

I can't answer that. I just painted mine with dark gray plasti-dip. looks fine.

I glued mine back up about 18 months ago, and it's coming back down again.... right above the windshield.

kd4... how hard is it to get out? I have a SCAB though, so maybe it'll be different than yours though.

Michaels Arts & Craft and Jo-anns Fabric sell Automotive headliner. They usually have 2-3 Colors to choose from. It's an all in one kind of deal and all you'll need to redo your headliner is a wire brush, 3m Fabric spray glue and something to roll it on. Under $60 and an afternoon of work.

Yes, you can just glue it to the fiberglass but it won't look very good, nor will it last.

The Material from the fabric store has the foam already attached to it so it'll only be one layer you'll be gluing down.

Just a suggestion.

I also have a scab. they are the easiest to get the head liner shell out of. With the front and rear doors open.

I've used 3M Super 77 for doing a Mustang headliner, and it worked wonderfully. We use it (Super 77) at work to hold down tooling that is subject to (literally) up too approximately 300 US tons of pressure, and it holds right in there. It cleans up really easy with mineral spirits too, should you over spray.

Thanks for the tip on the headliner material too Wolvee!

****... I have a 97. Only 3 doors. I'm betting mine will be a real joy.

I took mine out one side, so yours should be easy.

It comes right out with the 3, or 2 door models. Expy's might be a bit of a problem, but there is the back hatch.

I dropped the liner in lil red to clean it and to see what was above it. I will take it out again when I do the back window so I have lots of clearance to the frame bolts. When I tried to remove the frame from the donor, the headliner was a constant problem. Taking out the 6-8 bolts isn't that big of a deal and the liner goes right out the cabin doors at an angle without any problem on my std cab. A SCab would make it really simple.

I was just thinking I may have to remove the trim pieces from the drivers side rear. I already played that game when I put speakers in it... it was a pure joy, LOL. I wound up just getting a block of wood to hold it where I needed it because those clips did not want to come loose.
