Do all codes trigger a CEL?
Laugh all you want, but that is what the nomenclature from Ford is. I was a Ford tech for some time, and that is how we had to do our warranty description.
Hard codes are codes that set with the computer and are retreivable with a diagnostic tool. Soft codes are the phantoms that do not set a code, but are still persistant. These are the ones that people experience, yet the tech can not find or duplicate. They can not be read by a reader. The CEL may flash or come on and go out, but the code that doesn't set a code, is declared a soft code. Simply as that.

Here is a link to a site that explains it similar, but show another way that soft codes are described.

Never liked the misfire program, just throwing that out there.
