Default Cam Question

I've been looking into cams, but I have some questions.

1.) Which would you guys recommend for the trucks. I've been looking between comp cams XE268H or the XE270AH. The 268 is more mild than the 270, with the 270 recommending 3.55+gears and a 2000+ stall. I will list my current mods at the end so yall can form a more educated decision.

2.) does the head have to be removed to replace springs. I've heard mixed reports. Some say you do and some say you don't.

Current mods- 4.10 FRPP gears with Eaton TruTrac, Gotts mod and silencer removal. Pacesetter long tube headers and egr delete. High flow custom exhaust with x pipe and 93 octane race tune from mpt. The truck is a 2wd 4.6l super crew. I am planning on running an aftermarket stall converter. Thanks in advanced guys!

Default Cam Question

Not answering your question, but how's that thing drive with those mods? I'm wanting more power out of my truck and I'm not sure if I want to put money into my 4.6 or swap in a 5.4

After the exhaust was installed last week, it's a whole new truck. Low and mid range power is much better, throttle response is excellent, it pulls all the way to 5.2k RPM. I'll post pics and videos later

Default Cam Question

So instead of swapping cams only, I decided to invest in trick flow heads. For 1125 dollars they come with valves, retainers and springs installed. So in all I'm paying something like 800 dollars for good heads and I won't have to invest in valves or springs and retainers separately. My mechanic referred me to a shop that will custom grind me cams based on my preferences for a good price. Then all I need is a timing chain and tensioner kit. Figured that I may as well do it correctly and get as much flow as possible.

Something to be said for mods done correctly and properly. Looking forward to the outcome

Default Cam Question

After the heads are built, I can look on the bright side and say I'm only a crank, pistons and rods (and any other parts related to install) away from a basic built block. Lol.

I just wish there was something to do intake manifold wise. That's where these choke. I plan to run a custom manifold in the future when a turbo (or two) are in the equation. Unless I decide to run a blower, which takes care of that problem.

Hmm, maybe instead of of a new motor, maybe I'll just do a set of cams, some PI heads, headers and true duals, and start fixing some rust instead of buying a new motor.

Headers were a pain and barely cleared both the frame and the starter. But worth it in my opinion. Pi heads would be a great upgrade. Especially with a cam. Might sling you a deal on some 4.6l PI heads that will be available some time before February. 100k miles on it. Or you could look into the trick flows with the 38cc combustion chamber. The 38cc are the ones that replace the PI heads.

Hopefully I'm back to work by then and have some cash flow again, I might be interested in those heads for sure. I need to replace my drivers side exhaust manifold and the other side is brand new so that would be too bad to swap. I just love the way the way the torque converter is set up on the 4.6 and can not get over how good it sounds too. Very cool to find somebody who is doing mods to their 4.6 and not just swapping in a 5.4. Props man!

Thanks man! I'm with you, I prefer the sound of the 4.6. It sounded great with open headers, just ran like crap since the O2 sensors were 3 inches from fresh air. After the exhaust, not only is it incredibly deep, it runs so much better.

Time to start grinding doubles at work! Lol
