Default 1998 check engine code

Transmission sensor A circuit (PRNDL Input) is what the code reads. What does this mean? I can clear it drive it for hours and not trip it. As soon as I shut off and restart it trips this code immediately. I had the engine and tranny out while I replaced the engine and this is what is happening now with the check engine code. I also had lean bank 1 and bank 2 and an EGR code but that has gone away after clearing it out. I am looking to correct this so I can eventually sell it with a clean bill of health.
Also when I start it in the morning when its cold there is a clicking noise for 1-2 seconds right at start up. I remember this on my 97 4.6 too! What the heck is that?

Could the code be that the tranny is over full with fluid? It is a little high on the dip stick.

It is for the neutral safety switch on the shift lever. Either you broke it, or you don't have it plugged in. Check it there. You should find that is where you problem is. Good luck.

The code # is P0708 10 on the scan tool. The lever pulls down to drive does nothing until you put in second and push back to drive and then it engages in drive. Hope this explains what's going on.

Exactly. You are out of alignment with the Neutral safety switch. I believe that you have an adjustment at the switch, but it's been a while since I worked on our trannys. Definitely sounds like adjustment, throwing the code. Check the linkage and how the switch goes around the lever there. I'll see if I can find the info in my service manual for you.

I talked to my brother in-law he hooked the tranny up and has looked into our problem and he said we have a clip or something missing that secures the linkage. I'm not sure what it looks like or what the part # is that we will need to get to fix this problem? The tranny is shifting great though that part I'm thankful for.

Glad I could be of some help. The Exploder, is it a 4.0 or 4.6 set up. I have an 02 with 4.0. Great little truck.
