Default transfercase issue?

i have a 2005 f150 4x4, just the other day i was driving and i heard this grinding sorta noise only for a couple seconds and it went away. a while later i firgured it out, it was the transfercase, seems like its trying to shift int 4x on its own... it already wont shift into 4x with it moving... i already screwed that up some how, it just grinds. but why would it try to shift on its own without touching the switch? i ended up taking out the two "PCM 4x4 power" fuses, hasnt done it since but obvously not the way to fix it... help? ive also put the fuses back in and unplugged the switch.. no difference..

Sounds to me like a vacuum problem, with the truck running vacuum holds the IWE's to the 2WD and when 4WD is selected they vent and lock...sounds like you have a leak in your line or a bad IWE solenoid.

IWE = Intragated Wheel Ends...this is how our trucks en-gauge and dis-engauge the 4WD system...a very common problem. There's a solenoid located on the firewall behind the Battery...this is normally the culprate ...do a search lots of info on this subject. Good luck

Ok thanks. Now the other problem of my 4x not engaging if im going any faster than 5 km/h would that be the IWE' s themselves? Or could that be the solenoid as well? Thats been an issue since last summer.. thanks again

You should be able to shift into 4 Hi at a speed of 50 mph...4 lo you need to come to a complete stop and shift into "N" with your foot on the brake.
