Trans Problem
Out of the blue I started having some issues Friday. When my truck gets ready to go into OD (or 5th gear I guess?) it "slips" and just revs like it's in Neutral. Everything seems fine if I turn off "OD" on the shifter. Any idea what's up? Cost estimate? Just trying to figure out what the problem is (or ballpark it) and roughly how much that will cost.

Retaining clip on the overdrive Cervo. Mine did the same thing 4 years ago. Was 1.50 for the clip and had to change the fluid. Key is finding the broken piece that jams everything up. Safety feature kicks it into neutral to prevent further damage. Had to drop the pan twice to find the 3 pieces of clip that broke.
I'd look into this first before committing to a rebuild or replacement. Never hurts to start small and rule out all possibilities if it can potentially save you a large amount of money.
I've not had any other issues since and still shifting good 4 years later.
Hope this helps and good luck.
yep... OD servo retaining clip broke and the debris got jammed in the OD servo regulator valve in the valve body.

Well, I'd suppose what one would call "safe" is debateable.
Best, safest answer......No. My opinion is, it may be safe to drive from now till the end of the trucks life with no OD and be fine. Or, you may leave your driveway, the debris from the broken retaining ring get into "whatever it may please" and cause you some major damage.
I parked mine immediately. I have a friend who's is broken (atleast we believe its the same issue) on his 04 and he's been driving it that way for 2 months now. Although I've assured him of the risks, and I'd hate to be buying his gas, he just hasn't allocated the time to drop the pan to fix it.
It's a pretty straight forward repair with lots of information and "how-to" DIY instructions out there.
If that's all it is, your looking at the cost of a retaining ring, fluid, and a filter. Bout the same as having it serviced.
The other side of that could potentially be the price of a rebuild or new tranny.
I'd park it and fix it. But, we are all in different situations and if you got to drive it for now, I'd pay very close attention to how its performing and any slight change, I'd err on the side of caution and fix it while there's still hope of getting out of it on the cheap.
Good luck and I hope that's all it is.

So top end estimate would be, what, about 3-4 hours worth of wodk annd about $100 or so in parts/fluid? That certainly seems a better bet than paying for a trans shop to rebuild. Would scanning it for codes provide any useful info, or is the fact that it's functioning completely fine except the OD point to the very simple retaining clip fix?
Not sure about the codes. I never had any lights come on but, I also parked it immediately and fixed it immediately as well. If I remember correctly, I
had about $140.00 in the job but that probably included some cleaner / degreaser and an 18 pack!

In all instances that I've seen this same issue, no one had to replace any components other than the retaining ring and as far as I know, including myself, none had any other issues associated with this repair.
Just make sure you take all the pieces of the broken clip, if that is in fact the issue, and piece them together until you have the whole clip and are sure you got all the pieces out. Took me dropping the pan twice to get it all and I assure you, that was a lesson learned.
Hope that's what it is and it works out for you.
Well, the mechanic at my work is going to repair/help me repair this Saturday morning. I got the clip at the local Ford dealership...$3.36/ea. Getting a filter and fluid before then. Pray for us.
