What is the general wisdom concerning front brake rotor replacement? The truck’s most demanding work is recreational towing in the Colorado Rockies. Other than that, it has a pretty easy life.

I’m fine falling back to OEM from the dealership, but I’d like to get plain disks—not drilled or slotted—if there are good options. Also, I’m not opposed to saving a few bucks, again, if there are good options.

 

Very happy with the performance of Napa Premium rotors the past three years.

 

I'm still rocking the motorcraft rotors and am happy with them on my truck, but on my other vehicles I've used raybestos rotors with good results.
is your truck 4wd?
Something like RAYBESTOS 680180 they have a nice anti corrosion coating on the non wear part of the rotor.

 

The truck is a Lariat 4WD 5.4L.

I was wondering what all the coating stuff was about. Sounds like it’s anti corrosion stuff. I wouldn’t have cared much about that kind of thing, but the old ones are so corroded, especially in the internal cooling vanes. I have to think all that rust isn’t good for cooling.

I ended up ordering the Raybestos 680180FZN from buybrakes.com for $150 after a 10% coupon and $25 shipping.

I can’t claim to have done a ton of research or shopping around, but I need to get this done and this seemed like a reasonable option.

Side note: I also ordered the NRS pads; $110. I have to admit I was swayed by the Engineering Explained YouTube video.

I buy whatever RockAuto.com has on sale at a deep discount. That is if it's a major brand.

I don't have any idea how they can sell brake rotors and pads so cheap.

 

Which are considered major brands?

Also, should you consider non-coated options?
