Default Rebuild performance help

So I'm getting ready to start saving and acquiring things to rebuild my 2004 4.6L. It has 264k miles on it and I think the rings are about gone. (It stinks all the time). Question is what can I/should I do to get some more power out of the engine while doing a rebuild.

I got a quote for a remanufactured long block to start with instead of doing mine and got quoted $2434. Does that sound about right or should I rebuild and machine my block?

Who was the quote through?

What are you looking to do? There’s not
really a lot you can do performance wise for the 4.6 in these trucks.

Other than "stink" why do you suspect rings are gone? Excessive oil consumption? Blue smoke and oil out the tailpipe? Oily spark plugs? Low compression on the cylinders? I'd want to make darn sure I'm not just smelling leaking oil burning off the hot block and/or manifolds before tearing the truck apart, as a 260k mile engine will be leaking oil from several locations.

great advice.
as far as performance goes, the 4,6 is not a speed demon. unfortunately there is not many performance mods offered for the 4.6. (in the f150 anyway)

I haven't ran any test on it yet. I can't find any oil leaks and doesn't really burn oil excessively It just smells almost like it's running really rich. I dont really want a "fast" truck. But I do pull and 22' pontoon with it and it doesn't neccesarily like it. I'm afraid to pull it to far just due to the strain it puts on it. It will barely turn the tires over in the rain. And dry forget it, it doesn't have the bottom end power to spin a tire.

that's the 4.6 for you. they are not going to take off very fast with a lot of weight behind them. hills will slow them down too. i occasionally yow 13,000 lbs with my 04 4.6 and it don't like that either. when i get to a hill i have to floor it and hope i make it to the top. but it gets the job done every time and that is all that matters. i don't recommend doing that either

A tuner would help, but the 4.6 is not a powerhouse puller. It's just the way it is.
