Default Quick one, which programmer do I need?

I got a little bonus at work, enough to buy a programmer for myself, yay.

Anyway, which one should I get? My truck is stock, but I would like to get different wheels/tires later and am interested in some canned performance tunes. I also want to see all the engine live data and DTC codes, maybe a few at a time. I don't think I need the option to load custom tunes, but who knows.

Also, I see that they pop up in the for sale from time to time, any issues buying a used programmer or should I just spend the extra and get new?

Edge upgraded to a Gryphon seems to be the most popular choice and fits your needs.

I bought an SCT4 used. If you go used, you have to make sure the tuner isn't "married" to a vehicle. Not sure if that applies to other brands. If I were to do it over, I'd go for an Edge.

Ok cool.

I see people selling Edge Evolution and some selling "PHP Gryphon" for the similar prices.

What is the PHP Gryphon? Is that the upgraded edge?

Yes. The software on the Edge can be upgraded to a Gryphon for free. Then each custom tune from Power Hungry Performance is $40. I just use custom settings on my Gryphon level 2 program. If I had it to do all over or when I get a new truck, it will have an SCT Livewire with tunes from 5 Star or MPT. I think there is a new tyne company called SSI or something like that.

Quick question; I've talked to a few mechanics, and they all tell me the same thing, these programmers are a waste of money. Is this true? I too wanted to get one but am reluctant when mechanics are saying things like that.

They are a waste of money if you are trying to get better MPG. Don't buy one if that is your only goal But the performance and shift firmness is night and day difference. I got one to improve towing performance. And the ones that monitor real time gauges are just plain cool.

It won't be able to go golfing with you on the weekend. Sorry, couldn't resist. In the settings there will be an option to see the marry status. At least for my SCT, if someone wants to sell theirs, they need to put their vehicle back to stock and the tuner will then be un-married. If they don't do that, you may have to try sending back to the manufacturer to reset at a cost.

I just purchased an Edge that has been updated with Gryphon from a member on here. Everyone that I have talked to say nothing but good things about it. Pretty excited to get it. I run 305/70R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers and could use some extra get up and go, especially on the highway. Another good thing is that it allows you to adjust your tire size so that the speedometer is acurate. I will be running the 87 performance tune with a couple tweaks that Summers provided. I hope to see at most 1-2 mpg gain since I am only getting about 11.5 - 12 mpg right now. If I can stay out of the throttle.
