Default MPG Increase

I have an 04 xlt 150 with the 5.4 v8. I get roughly 16 miles per gallon and I don't drive like an a-hole. I'm looking to put the K&N Intake on and exhaust. I know this isn't going to give it 30 mpg or anything but I've heard that it will increase it a bit. Also my buddy has a silverado 1500 with a chip in it that lengthens the gears so you are running lower rpm's. Does
anyone have any input they could share with me? It would be greatly appreciated.

Eh, you may get 1-2 increase with that. If you did the intake, exhaust, and tuner, and gears, I would think you would easily gain some MPG's depending on the size of tires and wheels etc.

Thanks for the info. Is the tuner the chip? Do you have any suggestions on a chip and what it does?

Thanks CTRAHAN18. I've heard good things of the EDGE. Sucks that it's illegal for highway use in California. I wonder if I could get away with it anyway.

Default intake, chip, and electric fans?

It is good to hear someone else is thinking just like me. I have on order a KN cold air filter on order and am looking at a chip as well to try and increase MPG on most drives while also increasing horse power when I pull my 28' fifth wheel camper with a slide out. Currently I get 14 MPG and can handle pulling the camper at 65 ok.

Sounds like these add on can help but don't change the world on MPG or horsepower. I have heard some talk of switching from the belt driven fan to electric fans can also help. I have a tough time believing the fan takes a lot of power from the engine.

There are other "benefits" to the electric fans like cooling when the engine is not on, quieter, and faster warming of the engine but these are not a big concern for me. Does anyone have any experience with electric fans? Are they helpful or just expensive orniments.

Not if you like your warranty, the edge permanently encrypts itself into your computer so even if you set if back to stock, it will still show up on a dyno test.

Honestly, since your going to sink a minimum $300 for any name brand tuner, If i could go back and do it all over, i would get a tune from VMP since they do custom tunes...You can get 3 custom tune for your specific truck and mods for like $400 which In my opinion would have been well worth it looking back. I spent $427 on my superchip which is a "Tune in a can" and am satisfied with it.

And for the guy that mentioned towing the 5th wheel, you can get a tune for X Performance, X Tow, X Milage, (X being the octane of gas you use or would like to use.)

Thats my thoughts on the matter. However, Superchip is reputable and comes with a 2 performance settings, a tow setting, stock, and millage setting, and allows to adjust for shift points, shift pressure, tire sizes, gear sizes, and does DATA aquisitions (0-60, 1/4 etc)
