Default Justifying e-fans

ok guys/gals i have been looking for a way to justify doing electronic fans for my 150 to the wifey. here is what i came up with.

From what i have seen on here, the guys who did the e-fan install themselves have spent around $180-220 doing this. and they increase their mpgs by around 1-2 mpg. here are the numbers i came up with.

According to many insurance companies, average mileage for a vehicle annually is between 13k and 15k miles. and the average gas in my area is $3.70 give or take a few cents from station to station, atleast as of right now.

15K miles @ 16mpg = $3470
15K miles @ 17mpg = $3264
$206 Savings in 1 year! it paid for itself and the rest from here on out is gravy

13K Miles @ 16mpg = $3007
13K Miles @ 17mpg = $2829
$178 savings. takes about 14-16 months to pay it off.

10K Miles @ 16mpg = $2313
10K Miles @ 17mpg = $2177
$136 savings. 18-20 months to pay for itself

notice i used only a 1mpg increase. according to most people, they are seeing more than that. Troyer Performance claims up to a 2.5 mpg increase. depending on conditions of course.

Aren't the fans from Troyer Performance closer to 500 dollars? Also great information man, but the other benefits are a cooler engine, better AC at idle, more power, and no roar from the mechanical fan on those cool mornings.

Your engine also gets a proper warm up period and will last longer.

you are correct, they are around $500 for a Troyer kit, however, the guys that have put the kit together themselves have the same results and are spending $200ish on the whole project.

also, i have heard that you have to have a special tool to take off the fan/clutch. is this true?

fan clutch wrench.

you can rent one from a parts store. you basically pay for the tool, use it, then return it and get your money back.

+1, thats what i did. no reason to buy a tool you may use 1 or 2 times in a lifetime

Used Mark VIII 2 speed fan - $50.00
DC Controller - $79.00

Total - $129.00

I've had this installation in my 2005 4.2 V6 F150 for over a year now. No great gains in mileage (maybe the 5.4 does better), but great gains in AC performance at idle. Fits within the factory fan shroud with about one hour of trimming of the Mark VIII fan. $90.00 gets you a brand new one if your afraid to buy used.

A whole lot less that a Troyer setup.

other than hotair, has anyone had any experience towning with their e-fans?

hotair- wow, that makes me nervous, as i tow our race trailer every weekend(5300lbs) about 130miles total from April to September. i take it easy only going 55mph but it still makes me nervous that it could overheat at all. and i dont want to be changing fuses out every 60 miles either.

Bucko - i like the idea of the fan having the stock shroud on it and not having to trim the fan any.

Towing with an e-fan, especially a 2 speed, will be no problem. With a good DC Controller, you can adjust the temperature at which the fan turns on (the 2 speed controller turns on the second speed whenever the AC is on). Also, a good DC Controller has relays (one for low and on for high, and a "low start" fan current draw, so a 30 amp fuse works fine. I've had a 30 amp in my controller for over a year, and it has never blown. I would never recommend installing one or two fans mearly to the backside of a radiator; always use a shroud to allow the fans to draw the air through all of the radiator.

Here's a link to my e-fan install. It shows how I modified the MARK VIII fan (Taurus fan is simular) to fit the stock fan shroud:

https://www.f150forum.com/f4/soon-e-fan-install-55999/

See this web site for an explaination of his DC contollers, plus a good question/answer section to explain the myths of amp draw on e-fans:

http://www.dccontrol.com/faq.htm

This is the controller I have. Yes, he takes awhile to ship, as he makes a few controllers a week. He runs a speed shop for Mustangs, has had some back health issues, but he simply makes the best controller. Period.

Just for the record, Ford went with E-fans on the new model trucks.
