Default Headlight question

Ok so its that time to replace my headlights. I bought the oem smoked and when takeing out the old headlights i noticed there was bulbs in the side reflectors. Why are they there? When my headlights are on i see the light and the drl/blinker light but the other bulb is not on. Can some one help me out.

But don't LEDs have to be installed a certain 'direction'? Something about polarity?

Yes.. when you plug them in to the socket.. if it don't light up just flip it around. Type of bulb behind the reflectors won't matter much.
