Default Gotts Mod ECM?

Is it really necessary to disconnect the battery to reset the ecm when you do a Gotts Mod? How would the amount of air intake be controlled by doing this? Any insite would be appreciated.

OT- Has anyone used American Eagle 223 in their AR's? I am looking for decent quality ammo for a good price. Don't really like the Wolf or Herters, dull casings and poor reviews. What is a good compact scope, 3-9? NCStar is nice looking.

I just did the Gotts Mod this weekend on my '07 5.4L KR and only disconnected the battery for about 10 minutes and it worked fine. If you read the original Gotts Mod thread, a couple of people were complaining about rough idle until they reset the ECM.

Heres one:

Put the original tube back on, idle came back to normal, no loping and a lot smoother. Guess my truck no likey intakey mod.

Thanks for the intake mod and reminding me to reset the computer

Yes. I removed my exhaust and did gotts mod. Kinda. Just reset the battery Saturday and it runs better now. Nowhere near as much throttle lag.
American eagle ammo is great! Cheap too. I've shot it in my ar, colt python, glock. They are pretty accurate. Accurate enough for just cheapy target practice. Pick some up. you won't be disappointed.

any time you do a mod that increases air flow through the motor, its always a good idea to reset the computer so it can learn fresh the new parameters. if you did for example, UD pulleys or efan, i wouldnt bother to reset the computer but for intake and exhaust i would

Disconnected the neg battery terminal for about 2 hours so that should be plenty of time for the ECM to reset. Will drive it today and see if it made any difference. I had no issues before but wanted to make sure since I was doing the EVO and Gotts. Next I want to get a K N drop in and maybe E3s.

It's not the air flow that is controlled, The increased airflow is sensed by the MAF and the reading are sent to the ecm. (I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner at the same time) The ECM is adjusting the fuel being sent to the engine. If the ecm settings for the a/f ratio are not right, your truck won't run right for awhile. The mixture will be leaner after the gotts mod or any intake mod. By resetting it, the ecm starts fresh and adjusts timing, fuel flow according to what the ecm is reading through it's various sensors
I drove various speeds, and I had stop and go, and freeway for about 20 minutes after I did the gotts and the reset. I felt non of the lag I had prior to the mod. I am sure it would have taken longer that 20 minutes for the ecm to adjust if I didn't reset it.
I only had the cable disconnected for about 30 minutes. I was done in less time but I waited a little longer. When I do my exhaust after xmas, I will do the same. I am happy I did it, hope you are too!

Thanks for that explanation, it made sense and added to my knowledge base. I have not played with a vehicle this much since the 60's. I work on and maintain a lot of equipment; mowers, tractors, etc. but this vehicle is for fun and I have gotten a lot of ideas from this forum and implemented some, so thanks again.

I too modified and worked on cars extensively in the 70's vintage, some earlier
Automobile computerization has blown me away. How advanced it is, and how rudimentary the oldies are/were. But it is good to have a basic understanding of how things work.

Good luck, have fun.
