edge programmer questions...
Hi-
Just purchased the edge programmer and overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I bought it just for adjusting my aftermarket tire size, and to get a little better throttle response. I'm currently running the towing performance w/ 87 octane. I've made just a few changes using some of the profiles from other users on this site.
My questions are... If I'm looking for the greatest gains in mpg, and zero performance gains (for a long hwy road trip), is the transmission performance my best choice? I understand it's a truck and I don't really care that I get 15 mpgs. But since I have the edge, I might as well use it to the best extent possible. I'm just not sure if that's keeping it on the towing performance or changing it back to the transmission setting.
Also, my edge mph is about 2 mph less than my speedometer. Is that about as close as I need to get it, or should I try to match them up exactly? I've read that they can be off +/- 2 mph, but I'm concerned with the correct calculations for mpg when doing the hand calculations. (sorry, slightly ****)
Finally, I have an aftermarket intake, afe brute force, would an aftermarket exhaust help any? I'm happy with the performance, just looking to squeeze out better mpg.
off topic side note... I'm going to sell my 18" ford rims, which I believe are not the stock ones because I have an xlt (not original owner), on craigslist. They are in great condition, but I have NO IDEA what to ask for them. Anyone have a ballpark idea? THANKS!!

Towing performance has shown the best results not only for power increase but as well as MPG. Often more then not, using the EDGE provided size calculations won't work. You have to accomodate also the "squish" factor... the tire may be 33" tall with no wait, but when put on the ground with the truck weight on it, it may be more like 32".
On a side note, our trucks have had to say say the least a problem with running lean.... while using cold air intakes. A stock edge programmer is designed for the stock application (etc. factory intake, factory exhaust) you may want to send your evolution in and make it a gryphon and get some custom tunes.

I thought the lean issues are with the 5.4, I have the 4.6... should I still worry?
ok, good to know. I'm just not sure how much these things usually sell for on craigslist. In my area, there isn't anyone selling anything close for me to compare it to.
Here's a little info I picked up on the PHP forum for adjusting tire size (you need a gps):
1. Use the tire size calculations to get a tire size number (this gives you a starting point). Enter that into your programmer.
2. Reset your truck trip mileage and the GPS mileage. Drive for at least 15 miles. (give or take, just make sure you drive for a while so you get a good average)
3. GPS odometer / Truck Odometer x tire size you entered (ex: 2600) = Actual tire size
Hopefully this helps you get it more exact

To be honest I had to google 'rule of third'. I'm a civil engineer and by no means a stranger to math, but I had never heard it called that (if I have, I don't remember it, lol), I always think of it as proportions.
Learned something new! Thanks!

Another question... Do the settings stay if I unplug the programmer and mail to php to get custom tunes?
