In a word, YES. Even on a completely stock truck the Gryphon provides better gains. Bill at PHP wrote the canned tunes for Edge, and admits he had to cover a lot of bases to make it work with everyone's stock trucks. There is room for improvement, especially in the a/f tables and fuel trims at part throttle.

In your case, you need custom tunes. An intake on your year and motor has been known to cause engine failure due to lean conditions (I have pictures if you want to see the damage). Also, I'm sure Injen gave you a good marketing pitch about X amount hp gains. The reality is you won't ever get close to those claimed gains without proper tuning for it. So to get the best out of your intake, keep your engine safe, and get the best gains possible, a custom tune is what you need.

You can order tunes but they have no idea whether you have a Gyphon or not. Call and talk to them to get information on sending it in and so forth.

i have a stock truck besides bigger tires. i just got the edge evolution and havent heard of the gryphon since today. will php be able to custom tune my evolution? your talking about a lean intake, will the evo not fix that but the gryphon will? meaning i may be in danger with the edge leaning out but the gryphone custom tone fixes that?

Yes you have to CALL power hungry performance and speak to them about the custom parts on your truck and they will build you a custom tune or whatever octane you choose. I wouldn't run a cai on a 5.4 because of the lean condition I spoke to edge and they do not recommend ANY intake modification with the evolution!! I just reread your post and your stock truck should be fine with the evolution

hmmm ok. bc i was going to weld together mandrel bent tubing for my intake this weekend. so makes me think otherwise. i noticed edge states no modifications to exhaust or intake with the tuner. that was the other thing i was going to make, headers and probably dual flowmasters. well thats bullshiggity!! ok do you know of anything around it? helping the ignition not leaning out so i can modify the intake and exhaust?

I do not know of any way around it and I would rather be safe than sorry. It still wouldn't hurt to call php and ask them. Edge just says don't use them without custom tune period. I have a 5.4 with edge run it in level 2 and I have exhaust. I don't think exhaust alone will harm it.

Not trying to bring the dead back to life, but I have questions on this.

If I dont have any mods other than high flow cats and a SI/SO muffler would it really benifit me to buy the gryphon programer or should I just get the Edge. My boat is about 5500# so I like the tow option of the evolution and I currently get terrible gas milage so I could only go up....right?
