Default CAI

Looking to buy a cold air intake for my 5.4. Looking to get increase in horse power but mainly an increase in mpg. Looking to get a K&N but wondering if there are any better brands or if i should get any other type of air intake system that would give me better results. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Seems like everyone on here says not to run a CAI unless you have a tuner. Is it a good idea or not?

Usually everyone says that a Cai will lean out the engine. I ran an airaid for years without a tuner, it didn't help or hurt. I eventually bought a superchips tuner and purchased the custom airaid tune and it made a world of difference. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't buy one without the other again.

I have a volant CAI with an edge cs tuner and a rear cat delete custom exhaust. The milage definitely got better with these 3 additions, but the power and throttle response was night and day....
I would say you need to do the big 3 of 5.4 3v engine tuning to get anything out if it. It really comes down to your right foot. Watching the instant mpg feature on my edge cs is what keeps my milage at 18 to 19 on the highway and 14.4 mpg average city (depending on the city) (hand calculated)
Total cost of these mods ranges from $1000 to $1500 depending on how you approach them.
After running the Tow and performance tune on the edge, the truck feels like a dog with the stock tune.
I have an sct xcal2 tuner for sale in the classifieds that will wake your truck right up. I'm asking $180 shipped.

I currently have a magnaflow muffler and a superchips flashpaq installed aswell. What tune would I want to use if I got either the k&n or airaid.

I got Airaid, with a Flowmaster exhaust, magnaflow cats, and an edge Evo tuner. truck will be almost as fuel efficient as a prius. step on the pedal though, and itll go. loudly at that.

You wont see MPG gains from a intake alone. Combined with an intake, tuner, and exhaust, you will see maybe 1-2 mpg gains real world. But stand alone, intake won't do nada for that. Add some power yes, and help the engine breathe better indeed.

Besides who are we kidding? We mods cars/trucks for POWER not mpg. :-)
