Default Buying

Hi love this site been lurking for a while decided to officially join.

Anyways to my question:

Going to buy a 04-08 in the next few weeks been reading and researching. My question is there a best year or model to buy. I will be getting a supercrew. I keep reading the the FX4 models have a ton of issues in this year range. Which sucks because I love the way they look.

Any advice may save me money down the road thanks.

None of the 04-08's have any big issues. Just find one you like low miles and is clean and buy away. Other than the 5.4 ticking issue and the 5.4 plug issue there's not a lot that goes wrong

If you find a late 08 with a 5.4 it will have the 09 engine in it that has regular plugs and don't have the ticking issue.

Happy buying. You'll love it

5.4L engines pre-'06 have more issues with the plugs and phasers.

In addition to the above listed, the fuel pump module near the spare tire is another known issue that is a quick fix. If it's corroded, replace it and use some rubber washers to separate the aluminum mounting from the steel frame. Also the IWE solenoid for the 4WD on the fender wall... If it has a water guard on it, it's been changed to the updated part.

What are the symptoms of the fuel pump module going bad?

Intermittent stalling, truck doesn't start (no fuel), and worse form there.

It can also cause multiple codes due to misfires from lack of fuel to injectors.

If possible, concentrate on finding a truck that has a solid record of documented maintenance...especially oil changes. If it's an 04-07, verify that the plugs have been changed. Even if it's low mileage, it's a good bartering point.
