I believe he is an 06 by looking at his signature but who knows, he could have typed wrong. Does it make a difference between the 04-05 and 06-08 on running lean with CAI or just throwing codes from the running lean?

Question

i do have a question for shotgun, you made a comment about ford programing 04-05 f150's to run lean and the CAI causes it to run leaner hence the problems, did ford do this for a reason? thanks for any response

I did look up the diablo programer and it does claim to have settings for low and high octane with CAI, the sport trinity other than price looks like a good buy, claims to be customizable and can read multiple vehicles error codes, might be something to save for.

See above.

Well, running lean means you are using less fuel/more air for the same engine load = better MPG. Stoich = approx 14.7 to 1

Please keep in mind that from the factory, the calibrations weren't lean, they were right on the edge. Adding the intake and altering the intake geometery without altering the MAF transfer function pushed them over the edge. Custom tunes can fix this by altering the MAF transfer function and calibration table (in the PCM).

Here's some light reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air-fuel_ratio

You need to make sure Diablo has a tune for your specific intake.

If Diablo doesn't have that intake mapped, I would head over to Power Hungry Performance (PHP), VMP Tuning, or 5Star Tuning and look into an Edge/Gryphon or SCT (X3 or Livewire), and get 1, 2, or 3 custom tunes written for your truck. It'll be cheaper and perform better in the long run.

Sorry, I thought you were replying to ro87f150 and not the OP.

Haven't posted in a while, after the cleaning and reinstall of my CAI, the code came back. Do to the fact I don't have money right now to buy a factory intake to restore back to OEM I decided to try one last thing. I have my hypertech set for premium fuel and considering the issue and what I have heard from others I tried switching back to mid grade. After three days no check engine light so I decided to check for codes anyway. Not 100% convinced but only one error code came up P1000. From reading this only means the computer hasn't finished running tests do to being reset from programing. So keeping my fingers crossed might be why I am having so many issues with AFE on my 05 F150. Does bring to question, what settings are people running on there programers since most basic settings seem to be the same.

It's not a fuel issue. Your truck is telling you what's wrong, you just refuse to listen to it. Remember, even if the CEL isn't on, you can still hurt your engine.

Good luck.

Well with regular fuel it just took longer for the code to come back (P0171). I am now looking into selling some things so I can buy the original intake from a dealership since doesn't seem that anyone has a used one, and then of course selling my AFE CAI to someone that has an 06-10 F150 since those seem to be able to handle it. Sucks really. By the way shotgun are you a mechanic or were do you get your info, just curious.
