Default Additional Key with Chip

My truck only came with one key and remote and I'd like to get a second one made. The key for my 04 has a chip in it so the local hardware store (Ace Hardware) said they can make me a duplicate for $70

I've read a few things that suggest without a two keys I won't actually be able to program an additional key?? The guy at the hardware store didn't mention anything about this but I've got my suspicions. Does anyone have any experience with this? I don't want to spend the $70 if I have to just drive down the road to the dealership to have them reprogram both keys...

Any help would be great.

yes if you only have one key the dealer must do the job..they need to access the PATS module with the computer

Son of a... So can any shop with a nice diagnostic "computer" do this or is this a Ford specific job? My guess is the latter but I just had to ask.

My truck only came with one key and I had to go to a locksmith to get a second.
They were able to program it just fine, didn't need to go to a dealer or have two existing keys.
No idea on the cost because I made the used car lot I bought the truck from pay for it.
Its not a programmer only a dealer has, any good locksmith should have it.

If you have a remote starter installed, there's a way to do it with the chipped key bypass... but it's not easy. I did it on my Ford fusion but depending on the time you want to invest it may be just cheaper to bring it to the dealer. Unfortunately like the others wrote, you need two unique programmed keys to program an additional otherwise it needs to be programmed by the dealer.

This. Local locksmith around me charges $35 for the cut and program. I bought a spare key on ebay. Local stealership charges $75 for just the key program. No thanks.

Keys from walmart and the such are "clone" keys. A clone key will start your car but won't let you program another key. You need two different keys to program a different key. Or you can spend as many $70 as you want on clones
