Default What to do here

Yesterday went and looked at a nice 2014 f150 screw xlt that basically has everything I want package wise. Its a Canadian truck with real clean interior and exterior with the undercarriage looking good with just normal wear and tear on the driveshaft, suspension etc. however the tailgate has something perplexing. The two steel cables supporting the tailgate well one is cut in half and the other only one supporting the tailgate is fraying plus the backup camera doesn't work. Should this be a red flag in an otherwise what looks to be well maintained and clean truck. I'm still negotiating a price and wonder if I should keep it as is and use the flaws as leverage or if we can come to a price agreement have them fix the issue. I walked out yesterday as we were about a grand apart pricewise but I'm considering coming up a bit if they'll come down a bit. We'll see. Thanks for thoughts.

Just an update. 1 week later and the truck is still there and they've dropped the price to what they offered it to me for 26,975$. So since they appear to now see some sucker won't just come in and pay asking price is now the time to call back and offer the 26k for it they originally turned me down on or even offer say 25.5 or 25,750. Keep in mind the cables and b/u camera are still in same condition as explained above. Plus they're undercutting me 1k for my edge trade in value and that'll list for 14-15k so the excuse they use of not making money is bull, maybe they'll not make as much on the truck but overall yes they'll be making money otherwise they wouldn't be in business.

Edit: just got an update they dropped the price of the truck to 26,572$ so they're looking to move it. Just wonder if this means they take les for the trade in ot the fact per cars.com it's been up for 93 days and idk if this is a red flag but I'd love input. Planned on calling dealer Tomm and asking 25,750-26k for it. It still has the broken back up cam and console latch.

Personally, if I were in that situation and the deal was only a grand apart, I would take it in a heart beat. The cables are a cheap and easy fix and I could do without the back-up camera (although also easily fixable if you want to spend the money). Assuming you did your research and there are no other major problems, I'd say go for it. That price seems reasonable, especially if you were able to talk them down some.

Someone may have tried to steal the tailgate, are the wires cut? If you don't mind me asking what do you have them down to for price?

That is a good point. When I bought mine, the dealer warned me that the tailgates were easy targets (being aluminum and all). I usually keep mine locked to help slow anyone down who wants to steal it.

Still, its an easy fix if those are the only problems.

They came down to 26,975 I'd love to get it for 26k. The wires don't look cut although the one is hard to tell as it's already in two pieces. The one on the opposite side has the rubber worn away in the middle and it's starting to fray which I have no idea if someone tried to cut it or if it's just fraying from supporting all the weight on one side. The dealer said they'd throw in two new cables I'd just have to put them on.

They honestly probably are not making much on that truck and might not go any lower. I picked up basically the same truck (XLT/XTR w/chrome package) +leather and heated seats in February with 8400 miles for 26,000, but my friend is a auto broker so I didn't have any of the dealer fees.

They are not aluminum. If you don't believe me, bring a magnet outside.

I dunno...$26 still seems steep to me. I bought my loaded 2014 XLT with 17K May 2016 for $25.5K. But if you like the truck at the $26 price, I would look at the dealer and say that I would give $26K, condition as is, with some type of warranty included (because you never know what the prior owner has done). If they don't do that deal, then say that I would give them the $26.6K, but everything must be fixed AND the included warranty.

They're easy targets because they are easy to remove, and are pretty valuable to replace, esp with a camera built in.
