Using a Programmer for Improved Mileage.
I ran into a guy today at Tim hortons, who said on his 2005 5.4L F150, he gets around 11L/100 HWY Kilometers.
I am running about 16 to 18L per 100 Kilometers! On my 2010 5.4L F150
Everyone I talk to gets better mileage on their truck.
The guy mentioned he used a programmer to get more performance, and even after that he gets 11L/100KM Highway. I haven't done any research but maybe someone can shed some light on this topic.
I don't want to run out and buy one, maybe someone in the Toronto area can tune my truck up for me or know of a place to get it done.
THX.

Sounds too good to be true.
On 100% pure highway driving, I can do 12 L/100km. On mixed driving of country roads (80 kmph) on weekdays with some city driving in suburbia on weekends, I get 14 L/100km.
Country driving only - 80kmph with the odd traffic light: 13 L/100km.
I have a 2009 F150 FX4 5.4 L V8 and I drive with a very light foot.
The one thing that drives me crazy about our truck is that the metric L/100km gauge does not have any precision after the number i.e. nothing after a decimal place. I've been thinking of getting a Scanguage for some better monitoring but I'm not sure if I can mount it cleanly or not.

Ran an Edge programmer on my '04 SCrew on level 3(performance) got better gas mileage than stock(approx 1-2 mpg better) and ran on reg gas. It also firmed up the shifting which helped keep the tranny cool, especially when towing.
Only time I would get any detonation was on on +90F days in August if I jumped on it from a dead stop. Ran it that way till the day I traded it in w/147,000 miles & no problems.

The time it takes for a tuner to pay back is long, but if you have it long enough and gas is high priced it does make a different. Plus it makes the truck a lot more fun to drive. Here are some of the most reputable tuners:
SCT X3 from any SCT dealer and here are a couple places for custom tunes:

PHP Gryphon

Stock with about 30000km I'm seeing about 11.5 l/100 km highway (couple weeks ago on a trip to Jasper) and anywhere from 14 l/100 km to 18 l/100km in strictly city driving. These numbers are measured by hand, not what the display in the truck says
I'm seriously considering a custom sct tune from VMP tuning. But I'd love to see if anyone else has had a good experience getting better fuel mileage this way.
Someone asked about mounting a scangauge.....

I drive 50kms to work 1-way.
mixed. 35kms on county roads. and 15kms thru edge of the city.
mixed I get about 12.5L-13.5/100kms (worked out by hand.. which matches the screen actually.. about 740-800kms to 100L of fuel.
If I'm not in the city.. I can get upwards of 11.5L-12L/100kms. 850kms per tank.
that's driving with a light foot..
2009 F150 5.4L SuperCab 6.5Ft box, soft tonneau cover.

Keep in mind, it will take a year or better to pay for the tuner with any fuel mileage improvements.
Keep the tire inflated, Take off slowly from stop lights and stop signs. Do not use the resume button on the cruise control until you slowly reach highway speeds.
Do not put over-size tires on your truck unless you don't care about fuel mileage. Keep your truck serviced.
Driving habits are usually the reason for poor fuel mileage.
A lot of folks have an insatiable desire for power. Unless you do a lot of heavy towing or hauling, a 5.4 or larger is overkill and will cost you in fuel economy in the long term.
If you wanted to go to the expense of installing underdrive pulleys, it would help fuel economy over an extended time.

I think the unboard computer showing what you're getting
for mileage is a joke. If I take a long trip towing my 28'
travel trailor, my mileage will show 13 and stay there for
ever and ever even months after the trip. If I reset the
entire system it goes back up to 18 and stays there for
ever untill I pull the travel camper again. I know I NEVER
get 18 MPG. I think it's just the boys at Ford *trying* to
fool you into thinking you're getting great mileage.
