Default Spare Key

I just got a 2014 F150 Super Crew 5.0. Really like it. Its my second Ford pickup. I would like to get a third key/fob for a spare. I cant find any place that can make them. I have not tried the dealers because I figure it would be super expensive. Is a locksmith going to my best option? How much programming is involved. I have programmed older GM fobs before but never a newer Ford. I was reading some posts about Forscan, is that something I need to have to DIY? What would I need for Forscan, a laptop and a cable to the OBDII port? I might be overthinking this. Sometimes I yearn for the days of the foot starter button on the floor board. LOL.

If you have two keys, you can program a third with an onboard procedure without issue.

You can either go cheap and get a separate key/remote or spend a little more and get it all integrated into the remote-head key which you probably have now.

The EASIEST thing to do is to go to a locksmith and let them supply the part and do the programming. Find a place local that has a storefront location so that you're not paying a service call for them to come to you.
Ebay/Amazon keys are often a gamble, and sometimes it's hard finding people that are willing to cut/program them for you at all.... and if they don't work, you still owe them for the attempt. For this reason, I'd suggest allowing the locksmith to provide their own parts.

I am leaning toward the locksmith. I am leary of ordering a blank key/fob from ebay for fear of it being a chinese knockoff that will not work. I do have the two original keys so making a third should not be a problem at a locksmith. Thanks.

Yeah, they can be hit or miss sometimes.

The other thing about it is the fact that sometimes they're made of mystery metal or Chinesium that can be much harder than brass and damage key cutters. Some guys just refuse to cut stuff that they don't supply for that fact alone.

Does your truck have remote start? I went the route of buying the oem remote start key/antenna. If you don't have remote start and want it, that's my recommendation to end up with 2 oem keys.

I'm glad you mentioned the remote start. During my search for blank keys I found an OEM remote start on ebay for around $200 that included two blank keys. I think that would be worth that if I knew I could get the keys cut and programmed. I was also wondering if I would still be able to use my original two keys in conjunction with the new keys that would come with the remote start kit.

There is a Ford Dealership seller on ebay selling 2 keys and antenna for around $200, one of my favorite additions.

I struggled to program my remote start keys without forscan because I was maxed out on keys (bought my f150 used.) I had to use forscan to delete all keys and reprogram with pats, then used forscan to enable remote start in the system. Very simple process, the longest part is there is a 10 ish minute safety wait programming the keys.

I paid a locksmith something like $10 total to cut both keys.

we just bought a 2014 F150 Lariat extended cab. we only got one key. I bought 2 keys from EBAY ($30)and took them to a locksmith who cut them and TRIED to program them. neither seemed to work. still got charged $56. SO I ordered another 2 keys from someone else ($28) but didn't have them cut. I went to their 'help' site and the person stepped me thru programming the keys to utilize the functions on the remote (lock, unlock, remote start and horn). My curiosity got the better of me so I tried programming the keys that the locksmith had told me wouldn't program - one due to no chip - not sure about the other. I was able to successfully program both, but only one would start the truck via the ignition.

I then took the other uncut keys to get them cut.......and since I now have 2 working keys - (from previous purchase and the one I got with the truck) - I was able to program only one of those keys to do everything. again - one would do all - the other would only use the key fob functions but would not start the truck.

I'm able to return the non working keys but still have questions. seems like when I programmed the newest keys - the other lost part of their programming. not sure if I should have left them in the house? since programming for the remote function doesn't include putting those in the ignition. only hitting a button on the remote once the truck is in programming mode.

I now seem to have 3 working keys and 2 that will only work thru the remote - but won't start the truck from the ignition. one from each batch.

this brings me to this question: when putting the keys in to program the ignition you need 2 keys. I'll post the directions I followed for both below, but when you put your key in for the ignition programming - does it matter which side faces you? the fob writing side towards you for all? does it matter? I wasn't paying attention.

Does it matter which key you start with? the one that came with the truck and then the newly programmed one?
Can you only have a set amount of keys?

The programming didn't stay on one of them but when I put in a new battery - so far that seemed to help.

programming a remote:
Close all doors then open drivers door press unlock button on drivers door while door is open . Insert key into ignition. Keep foot off brake pedal. 1. Turn ignition from Off to Run 8 times ending in Run ( Do not start the car, run position is just before the vehicle will start Off is turned all the way back when the key can be removed from the ignition ). Must be performed within 10 seconds. Locks will cycle signaling entering into programming mode. 2. Press any button on the remote being programmed, locks cycle confirming programming. Repeat this step for any addition remotes. 3. Turn key to off, locks will cycle to end programming mode.

I ordered 2 setups like these from ebay. the key is OEM Ford, the fob is not. the keys came from 1 place, the fobs another place. I paid a locksmith shop $4/each to cut the keys. and programmed myself. I think all total was $40-50. I don't have remote start, and i like having the small basic key. I work part time construction and having just a basic key in my pocket is a plus.
