You should still be able to use maps. My ipad know exactly where I'm at using my homes wifi.

I tried that on my way home from work. Tethering wifi from my iPhone. But it was unable to find my location.

Im pretty sure you're going to need a gps like the dual bluetooth gps.. 100$

Damit. I did not know that. So why does maps know where I'm at when I'm home using a wifi signal.

yes the 3G model has the GPS antenna installed, wifi only doesn't .

3G = GPS chip, WiFi only = No GPS chip.

Even if you plan on jailbreaking/tethering rather than using the integrated iPad 3G on your car iPad, you should buy the 3G version for the built in GPS.
