Thumbs down Mine blew up this morning

Leaving for work, about 6" of new snow this morning and turned on the defroster to clear ice from the mirrors. About 2 Blocks from home, heard a very loud bang and look back and the window is all spider webbed. Nothing could hit from behind since I have a topper on the truck.

I called the local dealer to see if Ford would cover since I am about 500 miles out of warranty. Luckily I have glass coverage so wont cost me to have it replace either way. We will see what happens.

Red face rear window

They say it's in the wiring to the window and changed the way it is wired by the window

Driving to an appointment I hear a loud BANG! I first thought maybe a rock flew off a passing car or kids, but it sounded WAY too loud and I was in the middle of nowhere. Then I remembered this issue and pulled over to check the windows.

Sure enough, the rear passenger side panel of my 2011 FX4 is shattered. It's still in the frame so I took some pictures and am going to the dealer tomorrow for service anyway so I will show them then.

It was raining, the windows and mirrors were a bit foggy so I had turned the rear defroster on for a few minutes beforehand. Temp was about 12C.

The whole glass just looks shattered. You MIGHT say it's slightly spidered from where the heater wire contacts the glass. There is also oil leaking from that spot outside onto the cab body.

Wow, that is INSANE!

I just had my back glass replaced due to a faulty window position switch (determines when the power slider is closed, to light up the LED on the dash).

I hope they take care of your window!

Does anyone know if Ford has redesigned anything to stop this problem from happening on the 2013's ?

Default 2010 F150 Rear Heated Glass Malfuction

I have 2010 F150 with a heated rear window. The truck has 22,000 miles on it and I have had it more than the 3 year factory warranty. I purchased the PREMIUM CARE that extends the warranty an additional 4 years out to 75,000 miles. The warranty covers "Heated Back Glass )electrical only-not glass damage or breakage". Yesterday I turned on the defrost and within a few minutes the glass popped and spider cracked. The heating element malfunctioned super heating the glass causing the glass to break. There was no impact it is clearly the result of an electrical malfunction. Ford will not cover the $1,100 to replace the heated window. Does this sound right? I understand that impacts to the glass should be excluded. However an electrical malfunction should be covered.

A simple google of the problem reveals that numerous 2010 F150 owners have had the same malfunction with the same passenger side glass cracking. In some reported cases there were reports of smoke and fire occurring. Mr Gordon - Anchorage, AK
