Exclamation rear window defroster or exploding rear window

new member -- 2010 F150 XLT Lariet - signed up to put out some information and maybe get some - the other morning i left work and on the way out of the parking lot i hit the rear window defroster - dove about 3 miles to gas stations to fill up - while filling up i was sitting in front seat when i heard a loud bang - thought somthin fell on the roof - looked and nothing there - once the pump kicked off i got out and stepped back to fill hose - looked up and smoke was bellowing from the inside rear corner of the passanger rear side window - jumped in and turned off the defroster and then jumped in the back of the truck and started throwing water from an empty ice chest on the smoldering smoking window gasket - had a heck of a time putting out the 'fire' - ho the loud bang was the pasanger side rear window shattering from the heat generated from the gasket burning - did a google search and only hit of this kinda thing was a guy in Canada on a 2010 rapture sounded like much more damage guess he didnt have water handy - anyone have any additional info on this happening and what was the cause - told ford dealer good thing wife wasnt driving and just pull into car port and get out - could have burned the house down...

Sounds like a bad connection/short. Was there a water leak in the area near by? Rear window heaters do fail, but usually just open. Lucky you got it out. Keep a 2 1/2lb fire extinguisher handy for the future. It's an excellent investment/underhood fires/seat fires/help at a wreck site.

no leaks in the area - like i said there is a post of the exact same thing happening to guy with 2010 rapture - he posted the pictures - if you google 'f150 rear window deforster' it will pick the rapture forum and his post is 'exploding rear window' - the pics are just what mine looked like except i got mine put out quicker - glad it didnt happen when my g-son was with me - he sits on that side...

That is crazy. I would have moved it away from the pump and let it burn to the ground. I don't want a truck that catches on fire.

The only other case at this time was the one posted on the Raptor forum. Its the same window used in all the trucks with that option, so maybe its something to watch for. I use mine all the time with this weather we get.
