Default New Here

Ok so I have had a 2004 Explorer & it finally needs to go. Considering a Red 2010 Ford F150 FX4 Lariat XLT Supercab 4D. It has the V8 5.4. it has 50,000 & I would be paying $16K for it

Been doing some searching & obviously with the Explorer switching over to the F150, transmission in my concern.

Looking for opinions. Will this be a good buy? My concern is buying it & within a year having tranny problems.

Planning on being active here if the purchase goes through.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I appreciate it.

My 2010 is the 4.6L, but I purchased it this past January, and within a couple weeks needed to replace the torque converter. When I started experiencing vibrations I began researching and found quite a few TSB's relating to the torque converter for the 2010 - it's a common problem apparently. Luckily, I had a 30-day warranty where I bought it and they replaced the torque converter and rebuilt my transmission on their dime. I'm just glad the symptoms showed early enough for me to have them do it. My truck had 79K miles when I purchased it.

Either not searching correctly or not much on it here.

All 2009-2016 trucks come with the 6-speed 6R80 transmission - which is a very stout transmission compared to the 4 speed 4R75E used pre-2009.

wow thanks
Not sure where I was getting that but just ran the VIN & 6 speed. I thought the listing said 4, but now it says nothing about 4 speed or 6 speed.

The type or warranty the truck comes with is something you need to decide. It will ultimately depend on how much you want to spend. At this point, the 09-14 generation is at least 5 years old, so "Certified Pre-owned" may be a bit harder to find, but looking at autotrader, they are out there. A certified preowned will likely carry additional factory warranty until something like 100k miles/3years. They will also offer you additional warranty beyond that. You can buy it "used", which almost always comes with a 60 day, 3000 mile warranty. Same goes here, they will offer you additional warranty if you are interested, which is often through a third party. Since its a third party warranty, it wont matter where you bought it since youll be having it serviced at a shop of your choice, and reimbursed for the work.

If a warranty is important to you, then find the right truck and pay for it, but it ultimately depends on how much you want to spend on your new rig. I have no issue buying vehicles from their non-branded counterparts. I bought a Toyota Tundra at a Ford dealer and also nearly bought a F-150 from a Toyota dealer. I bought my F-150 from a mom and pop dealer, which offered me a third party warranty as well. Entertain the CarMax warranty as well. I have read that it is pretty sweet.

well the one good thing I have seen is I believe Street smart makes a reman trans & you can do payments on it...so is it pretty certain the trans will go to Hell? I don't get why Ford keeps doing this

Like I mentioned - it's running the 6R80 transmission which has had a record of being a durable transmission with relatively few problems when comparing to an older explorer which is notorious for transmission issues. The 6R80 was used from 2009-2016 in every Ford F-150 truck until it was mostly replaced by the 10R80 in 2017 & 2018 but is still used on the new 2019 F150's with the 3.3 V6. The 10R80 that is used in new trucks was built off of the foundation of the 6R80 - so it's had a good past and has been put in a lot of trucks.
