Default Miles To Empty Dropping Fast!!

Hello Everyone, I apologize if this has been asked already but I searched and nothing really Specific came up.

A couple of Weeks ago I was driving down the Highway and I had about 100 miles till empty displaying, then all of a sudden the miles started dropping by 2 to 3 miles at a time. When it hit about 60 miles till empty the low fuel alert came on and the Actual Gas Gauge was Redlined. So I hurried to a gas station thinking I was leaking fuel or something but I was not. When I stopped for gas and put the gas pump in the truck there was a loud hissing coming from out of the opening of the filling port. So before I started pumping I turned the key on and saw the fuel gauge jumped up to a little over a quarter tank. There seems to be a lot of pressure in the tank because I have never heard the hissing that loud before.
I have a 2013 Ford F150 STX 3.7 with only 51k miles on it.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what it could be?
Thank you all so much, I hope I explained it well

I believe you should check your canister purge valve. It might be causing your gas tank to get sucked in. Could also take a look at the gas tank, but it might look normal if this just started. Not sure if he goes over how to test it in this video, but there are videos of that as well.

My 2011 does the same. Left work (54 miles to home and no gas stations within 50 miles), had 122 miles to empty. Luckily made it to the gas station by my house with 4 miles to empty showing. Lesson learned.

"Miles to empty" displays are among the most useless features on the truck. I pay zero attention to it.

I Agree, but to date it has worked but when it drops so rapidly to the point the low fuel light comes on even when you know you have plenty of fuel in there it gives me a little worry thinking any moment I could run out. LOL

I had the same thing going on with my 2011 F-150 a couple of years ago. The dealership changed out the fuel pump assembly hoping that was the problem. I then went on across country trip and the problem continued several times. I went to another dealer and they changed out the fuel pump with the same results. Up on returning to that dealer the tech, service rep and shop manager got together and one had seen that problem before. It was the instrument cluster that was causing the issue. That was changed out and I've not has the problem since.
I hope this helps those having this issue!

I think I read that if that purge valve goes bad it can cause the float to act wonky and that's why the miles change. Could be wrong, it was awhile ago. I think you're on the rught track. You may want to consider checking and changing your PCV valve while you're at it. $9 part and they aren't meant to last forever. (Though I think you have low miles?)
