Issues that I should be aware of regarding the 2011-2014 trucks with the 5.0L?
From what I can tell, the 5.0 was used in 2011-2014 (wikipedia). What problems are there with these trucks or motors that I should watch out for? I'm in Michigan if that makes any difference (considering the environment and cold that might worsen known issues...)
I was reading this post https://www.f150forum.com/f70/dreade...13-stx-417483/ about a "dreaded 5.0 knock" as if it's a common issue? What is this about REPLACING THE BLOCK? I thought the 5.0's were "bullet proof" and those are the ones everyone seems to recommend...

There were (and please feel free to correct me guys, if I'm wrong) a small # of issues with improperly shaped cylinders in the 2011-2012 year F150s with 5.0Ls that caused issues and eventually necessitated at least a short block replacement, if not a long block replacement. I believe it should have been fixed with the 2013 year; I own one and I've had no issues.
(Side note: Obviously there's a difference between 'ticking' and an actual knock. My own 5.0L 'ticks' when its cold, but it's always done that, even when new.)

EDIT: found this https://www.f150forum.com/f70/what-b...-5-0-a-283369/ looks like it could affect 2013 and 14 too....

Engines make noise. I'm not even sure any of those replaced blocks needed to be replaced for longevity of the engine.
Other worries:
Silly door detents.
Fuse 27.
Transmission lead frame recall, but only for 2.5 of those years. Should be all 4 years.
Rust, like any vehicle.

Any way to tell what 2011-12 vehicles have the affected motors? Was it dependent on the plant where the motor was made? (I don't even know if they made those motors in more than one plant)

With that said...not off the top of my head. I'll have to look later.

'13 vehicles were affected with the oblong cylinder knock (ask me how I know ) and I haven't read anything about the 14's, although I'm sure they're out there. '13 is rare enough.
Is it a big deal? No, not at all. People have gone into the 300k+ on the motors with the knock. Mine was there when I bought it (didn't notice it, was probably too excited about the truck) at 47k miles. I've been tuned since 60k and I'm not easy on the skinny pedal at all, and the truck hasn't missed a beat for the past ~23k miles. I have an exhaust on it too and I can barely hear it anymore unless I listen for it.
Would I want a truck without it? Yes. Would I let it stop me from buying a truck for a good deal? Absolutely not. No known failures have occurred from this noise. If you can live with it, then no worries. I've certainly gotten used to it. Several Ford techs have also told me not to worry about it. Keep up on your maintenance and you won't be let down.

Can you elaborate on the Transmission Lead frame issue? what is that exactly? so the oblong cylinders only caused noise and no mechanical issue? where did the noise come from? Seems like you'd have excessive oil consumption since the rings and skirt won't fit perfectly.....
The transmission can jump out of gear and then will usually slam back into 1st gear at any speed. The NHTSA recall replaces the lead frame and connector parts. It can be found on their website, it's almost the only recall for these trucks. (there's a master cylinder recall for ecoboosts) It covers other Ford models, too. There's also been much discussion around here. I have a late 2013 truck that is not currently in the recall, but did have the problem. Dealer replaced only the connector for me, I'm expecting more problems to arise.

I have a friend that has 2013 F150 Lariat with the 5.0 and over 320,000 miles has had 1 ball joint and 1 IWE. no oil or noise issues and his was early 2013 bought in 2012. my 2013 F150 XLT Screw with a 5.0 4wd only has 53k miles but never been in for service, hope I don't jink my self.
