I'm going to go ahead with it. Don't want to limit myself if I ever need it...

Nice work everybody! While I haven't integrated an iPad into my dash, I've been running iPads full time in my vehicles for many years using RAM mounts. Can't imagine being without one.

This will be the button i will be mounting in the dash piece to use for the home button
Can you elaborate on your home button? It it just a mechanical pass-through that presses on the actual mini home button? I'm assuming you didn't crack open the iPad case and solder in an alternative button...

My reason for trying to build a cable that can do both is, when I'm in the truck, I want the display on... That's why I am putting in there.
So far I have failed at the Y cable... I'm going to continue trying.
On my F150, I have a full size ipad that doesn't get along with Sync's lame USB current output. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find a solution to this and came up empty... I also tried y-cables, custom cables, posting on uber-geek circuit hacker forums hoping for a solution and found NOTHING. I gave up trying to run my iPad on USB with sync and now just use bluetooth with the iPad plugged into a proper car charger. I has it's own problems and limitations.

If u jailbreak the ipad u can get a cydia app that does just that.
No jailbreak yet for iPad Mini. "Any day now...". Just eliminating the swipe screen is reason enough for me to jailbreak it when it becomes available. Cydia "pluggedin" = Power on, ipad on and running, Power off, ipad off. Seems simple, but for some reason, Apple believes the *only* time you might want the device to come live without a swipe screen is if you are using the smart cover...

Any updates from the guys that are trying this out on their own??
I'm very happy with my RAM mount iPad solution in my FX4, but I am doing a dash install in my 911. No bondo, but a fair amount of rewiring and relocation of stock components and some creative dremel work. The iPad will feed into a new Pioneer 9500 single din head unit, which has high output USB connectors that will happily connect to and charge my iPad mini.

Yes it is just an extra button that I bought and made an extension piece to hit the actual iPad home button
