Default Custom Tune

Just installed my Flowmaster Force II, so now it's time to look at a custom tune. Like most, I've read a number of threads on here going back and forth about Edge EVO and/or SCT. Forgive me for "uninformness (I think that's a word, if not, it is now)," but does one really need an in-cab programmer to achieve the desired results from a custom tune? Or, can the shop perform a custom tune (with full Dyno) without an in-cab programmer, i.e., Edge or SCT?

Your thoughts and please keep it on topic...

Default SCT

Well I have the SCT and a 5 Star tune. Mike owns the truck so if you want a tune from someone who knows go there. I love my SCT and 5 Star tune. Had it on my 2010 4.6 3v and now 2011 5.0

Default SCT from 5-StarTuning*

Mike at 5-StarTuning is awesome, I've had my SCT for about 3 months now and dont have a problem with it at all. I had an Edge Evo on an old '05 SCAB and loved it, it greatly improved my fuel economy and gave me the lil umph I was looking for.

The best explanation I've read on here was " box tunes are like going to JC Penny's for a suit and Custom tunes are like having a suit made for you by a tailor shop".

Very happy with the SCT with 5 star tune. I had a Hypertech on a previous vehicle and it sucked.

Mike at 5-Star tuning is the only place I would recommend. Full Stop.....

Great guy..Customer service is unbelievable...and he knows what he is doing with the Ford product. You are taking your chances with some of these other guys...Been there done that...

I am a noob when it comes to these tunes. I just don't get it, I would think the factory knows how to tune the vehicle to it's best performance. Don't you risk messing something up with your motor with these tunes by increasing rpm's and so-forth?

NO.

However, tunes will void your powertrain warranty.

So there is no risk of damaging the motor with these tunes from Mike?

With out a doubt spend the extra money and get a SCT from 5 star tuning...Mike is one of the best customer service people I have ever debt with. Tunes are great also. I tried the Hypertech on my 2010 5.4, then went with SCT.....No comparison..

So, it looks like if I plan to get a programmer, SCT is preferred over the EVO. Got that part...

What about whether or not it's "necessary" to even purchase a in-cab programmer? Can a shop perform the custom tune without a in-cab programmer?

It appears "5-Star Tuning" is the HOT shop to go to. Unfortunately, I'm here in Germany...buuuuuut, we do have a pretty hot shop here as well.
