What about whether or not it's "necessary" to even purchase a in-cab programmer? Can a shop perform the custom tune without a in-cab programmer?

It appears "5-Star Tuning" is the HOT shop to go to. Unfortunately, I'm here in Germany...buuuuuut, we do have a pretty hot shop here as well.
My .02cents get the programmer and learn to do it yourself . Like another member said it will void your PT warranty, and if you have your own programmer you can always return it to stock before taking it in for warranty work.

I am in the same situation but for a month now I have been reading the threads and the Gryphon CS/CTS looks to be the best programmer (im my opinion) out there. Cts has a nice touch screen that will display your rear view camera, if you want that.

HOWEVER, I was talking to a few people and they told me that a programmer is only necessary if i want to change between tunes and look up diagnostics. I was told that I could just buy some software for my computer and tune my truck using a obd-11 port wire, that would connect via usb.

Anyone know if this is possible? I'm very curious as it would save me a lot of money, especially since I have my Laptop in my truck at all times while travelling.

Sure. It's called the SCT Pro Racer package....but check the price of it.

To be honest, I dunno whom you were talking too but I doubt they have actually TUNED a car/truck before. For example, a SCT X3allows you to adjust SOME features like global spark, WOT, idle speed and such like but all the stuff that you really could mess up, it's locked out and only a SCT dealer can access. For very good reason....

When it gets down to edit tables and IAC comparision charts, it gets very very complex. It can be learned but only by seriously studying it. I've used SCT X3 tuners for years and I know enough about it to realize I only know enough to mess it up.

Get a tune from solid vendor like 5 Star who as been through the SCT training program, and call it a day. Just my .02.

Hey thanks for your input. I hope i didn't give the wrong impression but I was never attempting to make my own tune. I was just wondering if it would be possible to tune a truck using a laptop. Using this program (assuming it doesn't cost more than a tuner) would i be able to tune my truck if SCT were to create a tune themselves and send it to me.

Sorry... this concept is new to me and I was just interested.
