Default Cracked Windshield

I discovered yesterday morning that I have a crack in my windshield. It is about 6 inches long and starts at the black line on the bottom and goes up behind the center of the passenger side wiper. It looks like there is two small chips that caused the crack to form. I talked my insurance and they said if the cost to fix or replace is under my deductible, it would be easier to just pay for it myself. Safelite is 409 to replace and 110 to fix the crack if they can. Can a crack this large be fixed or do I have to replace the windshield? The picture isn't very good, but you can see the crack and the two chips.

We have a shop that replaces windshields for around $200. Can you find a better deal?

I have had to replace 3 windshields on my sons Jeep in the past few years. All done by Safelite. They cannot fix that crack. If it is bigger than I believe quarter then they cannot do it. Also I have found any chip that is near the edge is only a matter of time before it cracks. (I tried to fix one that was close to the edge and it cracked the next day anyway)

They will quote you 2 different prices, thru insurance and if you pay. They will also use a generic brand windshield. You have to specify OEM if you want it and it will cost more. (Your choice on this one)

And like the post above I have found cheaper shops out there. But the work they have done has been good.

I doubt that it can be fixed.

Since I bought my truck, I have wondered what the "Soundshield" was about on my windshield.

If its not bugging you I would just leave it. When it spreads into your field of view then replace.

I agree, however considering OP is in Ohio, with the temps and defrosting I don't think it will take long to continue cracking.

Id still roll the dice. It will probably crack straight up and stay out of his way.

It's a thicker layer of material sandwiched between the glass.

That 409 is for the same glass as factory. Their cheapest option for replace is 328. Safelite is the only one I have checked on so far. I am going to talk to my dealer when I get off work today and then talk to the local body shop on Monday to see what they do.

If you do decide you want to get it fixed I would wait till summer. Nothing worse than having a brand new windshield installed and have another chip/crack caused by winter rocks.
