There have been several threads now discussing the less than stellar performance of the "700" watt Sony sound system. I ordered my truck with Navigation for the built in features knowing that the system would likely underperform. I ordered the Boston Acoustics SR80 speakers and had them weeks before the truck arrived. Replacing the factory door speakers made a tremendous improvement to the sound quality and brought the sound stage up closer to the dash. I understand that aftermarket speakers are limited to the power they receive from the head unit and factory amps, but quality can go much further than quantity.

Furthermore, the system is advertised as having 10 speakers; the rear door speakers are coaxial so Ford counts them as two where as the front speakers are standard 5x7 midrange woofers with a tweeter in each A pillar, center in the dash and the sub. The 700 watts that are advertised (if there really is 700 watts available) would be max wattage and no RMS value is given. I believe the door speakers had 20 or 25 watts max listed on the back of the magnets. Other than having the polymer coating over the face and cone f the speaker, the factory Sony pieces are definitely underwhelming.

My point is, replace the anemic factory speakers with higher quality aftermarket pieces if the provided system doesn't cut it. Focal, Boston Acoustics, Kicker, Polk, the list goes on and on all make great products to fit the budget and listening preferences of nearly everyone. Being in my mid 30s, I am past the days of deafening bass and even loud exhaust becomes annoying after awhile. I just enjoy the comfort of the truck, the amenities, and the occasional classic vinyl turned up loud enough That I can't hear the rice rocket's coffee can muffler next to me at a traffic light.

I did the mod because I thought the sub was a bit weak. Now it makes the the truck rock

can you give me the link to this post? Can’t seem to find it

Ahh, what's with the massive thread-necros right now?

I know the thread you're talking about, though i don't know where it is - i've done the mod, just pull the sub and fill the box with pillow stuffing, i had to turn down my bass afterwards so it didn't sound weird.

I'm more interesting in getting actual improvements i can notice from replacing the front door speakers and not having to bother with upgrading anything else.

Nevermind, here's the thread: https://www.f150forum.com/f38/how-ma...-better-77667/
