Talking Shudder Problem Fixed

My 2010 Ford F150 4.6 liter Super-crew cab XL is finally fixed. I went to a local transmission company and paid for a Transmission rebuild with converter and no more shudder. Been driving it for 2 weeks now and no problems. It is still a damn shame that Ford will not issue a recall on the shudder issue. Although my truck is fixed and I will drive it until it falls apart now, I would still like to recover my expenses!! Just FYI for peeps still looking for a fix.

I have a 2012 eco crew 4x4 that also had the shuddering issue. On several occasions when attempting to pass, the vehicle would shudder violently and then go into limp mode. Almost caused an accident once. I replaced coils and plugs multiple times. Finally, I took it in to the dealer and they replaced the turbo sensor. Problem solved! That was about 8,000 miles ago and the issue has not arisen again.

@Uplander Do you recall if it through a code? What made the tech think the turbo sensor might be the issue? Man, if this is the case, I'll be a happy fella to try it out. I've tried the catch-can approach, replaced all the coils and plugs with quality parts, and just had the shudder again one day after the swap out. Any insight you have will be great. Same engine here. 2012 ecoboost supercrew.

Techojappa,
yes, I have a code reader and every time the shudder happened it was throwing misfire codes. Each time I’d replace the plug/plugs and it would immediately do it again. I then tried replacing the coils and boots. Again, it continued to shudder. I tried re-gapping plugs per specs to no avail. Finally, I demanded the master tech at my local Ford dealership diagnose the issue and asked that I drive so I could re-create the problem. My truck would shudder when under hard acceleration or on a steep incline under load. Once the tech was in the truck with me, he hooked up his code reader/laptop and off we went. I drove to a stretch of the freeway with a hill (lots of hills where I live) and I hammered down on the accelerator. Sure enough, the truck starts violently shuddering. Tech said he was recording dozens of misfires on multiple cylinders.

Once they replaced the turbo sensor, all has been flawless. Really happy they finally found a fix.

I am new to this forum and have a 2011 EB with 170k miles ( bought at 142k) and just had my first experience of shudder while pulling my 24' travel trailer . then after unhooking it at the campground experienced it more while driving without the trailer. I have spent the last few hours reading this thread and lots of things have been tried. is there one turbo sensor or one for each turbo ? that would be something worth trying that I could do myself

thank
Mark

Hey, folks, got a question related to this: Does anyone know if the shuddering/stumbling issue has been resolved? I'm considering trading in my 2011 FX4, 5.0 for a new truck. I'll probably go for a 2021, and am looking at the 3.5 EB. I'd love to have the Dual Turbo, but I'm not interested in a Raptor. So the single turbo is the route to take. I've enjoyed the 5.0, but don't need the extra size any more. Any insight from those in the know is appreciated.

All 3.5EB are twin turbos. I’m on my second one now. They make a lot more low end power than the 5.0. I had a 14 with the 3.5EB, a 17 with the 5.0 and now a 19 with the 3.5EB. I have had no complaints from any of these engines. I would definitely recommend the 3.5EB as it has more power and better fuel economy than the 5.0. The raptor comes with a higher performance version of the twin turbo 3.5EB.

The first couple of years I had this problem two or three times. At different times I have replaced coil packs as needed, and Spark plugs. Finally I drilled the hole at the bottom of the Charge air cooler, changed all new spark plugs gapped at .0028 and all new coil packs at that same time. 3 years now and I say my problem is gone at least until another coil pack goes bad or spark plug blows. I had carbon tracing on several of the plugs replaced.

As already stated, all Ecoboost are twin turbos. I have a 2012 Screw with 280k miles. I've had no trouble with turbos, but I do have the hard shift into second when cruising a parking lot. I drilled the hole a year or two after I got it, and have had absolutely no problems since then.

I traded in my 2011 Screw King Ranch Ecoboost last year for a 19 Screw King Ranch with the Gen 2 Ecoboost. Not aware of anyone with the Gen 2 having the shudder problem but you might want to visit the F150ecoboost forum(F150ecoboost.net) to survey a larger crowd. I will tell you that the Gen 2 version of the eco is light years better than the Gen 1.
